The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.
[Prayer]
The word Greek word “Christ” is synonymous with the Hebrew word “Messiah.” Thus, in when Andrew met Jesus, he ran to his brother Simon (i.e., Peter) and said to him, “We have found the Messiah,” and then John adds, “(which means Christ).”
He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
It’s a word that comes from verbs that mean “to rub” or “to anoint someone.” So, in the OT we see kings, priests, and prophets anointed with oil.
In , we see David anointed as king....
Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince over his heritage.
In , we see David anointed as king....
But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. And as the sun was going down they came to the hill of Ammah, which lies before Giah on the way to the wilderness of Gibeon.
And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. When they told David, “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,”
In , we see Solomon anointed as king...
And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet there anoint him king over Israel. Then blow the trumpet and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’
And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet there anoint him king over Israel. Then blow the trumpet and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’
In , we see Aaron, the first high priest, anointed with oil...
You shall take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him.
In God told Elijah who to anoint as king and who to anoint as prophet...
And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place.
By the time Jesus was born, many passages in the OT were understood to a specific anointed person—a specific anointed prophet, priest, and king—who would redeem God’s people.
Matthew tells us right from the start v. 1 that the Anointed One was Jesus—that Jesus was and is the Christ. , “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ...”
Very often in the Bible Jesus is called “Jesus Christ” and also “Christ Jesus.” Sometimes He is just referred to as “Christ” or “the Christ.” The gospels call Him Christ. Paul calls Him Christ. Hebrews, James, and Jude call Him Christ. The book of Revelation calls Him Christ. The whole NT is in agreement; Jesus is the Christ—the Anointed prophet, priest, and king—the true Word of God, the true Mediator between God and man, the true Ruler of heaven and earth.
Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”
This Christmas (and always!) we must believe that Jesus is the Christ—the Anointed One.
[TS] There are three SCENES that I want us to focus on tonight in which we see Jesus as the Christ—the Anointed One.
Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.

Scene #1: Jesus, the Christ, is anointed at His baptism ().
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
[Exp]
[Exp] John knew that he was a sinner and that Jesus was not, so he didn’t think it was necessary for Jesus to be baptized. He thought Jesus should baptize him! Jesus, however, said it needed to be done in order to fulfill all righteousness. John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance and I believe Jesus’ baptism was a baptism of repentance on behalf of all those who would be saved through faith in Him.
When Jesus comes up out of the water, the Spirit comes to rest on Him. Then the Father says from heaven, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
This is Jesus, the Christ, anointed at His baptism.
[Illus] On May 10, 1994, I was baptized in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Columbus, Mississippi. I remember trying to remember when I was supposed to say, “Yes, sir,” and I remember trying to make sure that I was going to hold on to the pastor’s arm the right way. After it was over, I had to come back into the sanctuary in front of everyone with soaking wet hair.
I made my way down the row where I was sitting and finally took a seat. That’s when another boy leaned forward and whispered, “Good job, Rocky, I wish I could do that.”
Good job? What had I done? What did he wish he could do?
His statement used to perplex me, but I think he meant that he wished he could publically repent of sin and follow Christ Jesus in righteousness.
[App] There’s a lot of meaning in baptism. It’s a symbol of our dying to sin and rising through faith in Christ to new life before God. But it’s also a public statement, “I’m done with sin. I’m dead to it. I’m alive to God now through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. I’m pursuing His righteousness now.”
Most of us in this room tonight have been baptized in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We have believed on Jesus Christ for salvation. Through faith, we have been buried with Him in His death and raised with Him in His resurrection. We are dead to sin and alive to God. Do our lives reflect it?
Are we living as Jesus did? Continually turning from sin and turning toward righteousness before God?
Or are we living like so many others in our day who continually turn from God by turning toward sin?
the One who repented of sin in our place; the One who died as the sacrifice for sin in our place
If we know the Anointed, having been baptized in His Name and having been anointed with the same Spirit as He was, we turn from sin and turn to righteousness just as He did.

#2: Jesus, the Christ, is anointed for burial
Scene #2: Jesus, the Christ, is anointed in Nazareth ().
Scene #2: Jesus, the Christ, is anointed in Nazareth ().
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
[Exp] By the time Jesus came to his hometown of Nazareth, he had done incredible things in the region of Galilee. He had taught with authority the likes of which no one had ever seen before. He had healed with a touch and even with just a word. And he had forgiven sins. So there was an amazing sense of expectation as Jesus came to teach in the synagogue in Nazareth. What would he say? What would he do here in his hometown?
He had taught with authority the likes of which no one had ever seen before.
The scroll with God’s word through Isaiah the prophet was handed to Jesus. He unrolled it and read mainly from but with a little mixed in. The general theme of his message was that the time of the Lord’s favor was at hand; that that day was the day of salvation for God’s people and it had arrived in him! There could be no mistaking Jesus’ message as He read from Isaiah, rolled up the scroll, sat down with every eye fixed on him, and began to teach with these words, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing,” (v. 21). You see, the people in Jesus’ day were wondering who the “me” would be in . “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me...” Who would be the Anointed One? When would He come? Who is the Anointed One who would proclaim God’s favor like this? Who is the Anointed One who would actually bring about the time of God’s favor? This Anointed One would not just talk about these things. He would do them. He would actually set at liberty those who are oppressed in fulfillment of .

We try to surprise people with some part of our sermon, catch them off guard, maybe even shock them. In my preaching practicum class in seminary we preached sermons and listened to each other preach. One guy named Rob tried to surprise us in one of his sermons by starting with this story about someone who did something incredible or was in mortal danger, I don’t remember the details, but what I do remember is that it was immediately apparent from the beginning of the story that the story was really about him. That’s why when he finally revealed that the story was about him, most people just nodded their heads as if to say, “We knew all along were that story was going.” I don’t think the people in the synagogue in Nazareth on this particular Sabbath day knew where Jesus was going when he began to read from don’t think they expected Jesus to say that what he read was about him.The sheer audacity of making such a claim would have likely driven that thought from their minds. How could anyone have the guts to say, “This passage about the Christ, about God’s anointed one; this passage is about me,”?For anyone else, this would have been blasphemous, but for Jesus it was the truth. [App] Luke showed us in that Jesus was the anointed one, the one on whom God’s Spirit rested...

Scene #3: Jesus, the Christ, is anointed for burial ().
Scene #3: Jesus, the Christ, is anointed for burial ().
Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.” But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
[Exp] The woman who prepared or anointed Jesus for burial in this story is, according to , Mary, the sister of Martha, the busy one, and Lazarus, the one Jesus raised from the dead.
In the home of Simon the leper (who had apparently been healed), Mary came and poured very expensive ointment—probably worth a year’s salary for a common laborer—on Jesus’ head as he reclined at table. The disciples, however, consider this a waste and become indignant, “…this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor,” ().
But what does Jesus say about her anointing Him?
But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
Mary understood what the other didn’t or didn’t want to understand. She understood that Jesus was going to die and then He was going to be buried. She had done a beautiful thing.
Fast-forwarding a bit, we remember that after Jesus died on the cross and was hurriedly buried in a borrowed tomb before the Sabbath, a group of women saw where he was buried and went to prepare spices and ointments ().
They rested on the Sabbath and then came to Jesus’ tomb the next morning with the spices they had prepared (). They were hoping to properly anoint his body for burial, but they had missed their chance. Jesus had been raised!
Angels appeared to them and asked, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen,” ().
Jesus, the Christ, didn’t need the full anointing for burial. He wouldn’t be dead very long.
