“And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month.
We kinda skipped over this little detail this morning, but I did want to go back and address it.
Elizabeth- barren
But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years.
Barren- Not fertile.
Advanced in years
But God.
God has proven that he is sovereign over the womb.
Think of the Israelite women in Egypt…
But the sons of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly, and multiplied, and became exceedingly mighty, so that the land was filled with them.
Think of Hannah
but to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, but the Lord had closed her womb. Her rival, however, would provoke her bitterly to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb.
Her rival, however, would provoke her bitterly to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb.
For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.
We’ve seen in Scripture over and over that God is the one who grants life.
And God proves it again with his work in the lives and wombs of Elizabeth and Mary.
After hearing from the angel Gabriel, Mary went to see Elizabeth
Luke 1:39
Now at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to the hill country, to a city of Judah, and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! “And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me? “For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy. “And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.”
Now at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to the hill country, to a city of Judah,
Now at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to the hill country, to a city of Judah, and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.
But look what happens.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Keep in mind who it was that Elizabeth was carrying.
Hers was a special baby as well. She would bear the last Old Testament Prophet.
John the Baptist.
“It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
John’s message
The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! “This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’
Joh’s purpose would be to pave the way for the Messiah.
To point to Jesus. To decrease as he would increase, and he already rejoices even in the womb of his mother.
And Elizabeth being filled with the Holy Spirit- We see this to empower for specific task, She cries out:
Look what she says.
Luke 1:
Eliz. points out that Mary is blessed among women.
Indeed she is. She is blessed to carry the Lord. God has blessed her with this opportunity.
But again, being blessed doesn’t mean that she deserved it.
Not trying to beat a dead horse here.
But there are a lot of people who get this wrong and worship Mary and she is not nor would she want to be worshipped.
Jesus makes this clear.
While Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed.” But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”
Elizabeth isn’t worshipping Mary. Although she calls her blessed.
The term blessed recognizes that Elizabeth knows that this came from outside of Mary.
I love that Elizabeth already understands that the baby in Mary is her Lord.
She knows this because the prophet inside of her leaped for joy.
And She makes one last comment-
“And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.”
Mary believed what was spoken to her.
She didn’t doubt, and she didn’t laugh.
Elizabeth’s husband… His faith was not so strong.
He didn’t believe.
Mary believed.
“It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.” The angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. “And behold, you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”
Zechariah doubted.
Sarah laughed.
Luke 1:17-
Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “There, in the tent.” He said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; Sarah was past childbearing. Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, when I am so old?’ “Is anything too difficult for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” Sarah denied it however, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
Zechariah doubted.
Sarah laughed.
Mary believed and worshipped.
And she offers a song of praise.
Listen to this. And I would encourage you to go read as well
Mary worships here and i want you to see how:
And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. “For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed. “For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name. “And His mercy is upon generation after generation Toward those who fear Him. “He has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart. “He has brought down rulers from their thrones, And has exalted those who were humble. “He has filled the hungry with good things; And sent away the rich empty-handed. “He has given help to Israel His servant, In remembrance of His mercy, As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and his descendants forever.”

Luke 1:46-
Luke 1:46-
Thats what worship is. Its making much of God, and finding our joy in him.
Worship also realizes our unworthiness
“For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.
“For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed. “For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name. “And His mercy is upon generation after generation Toward those who fear Him.
“For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.
She recognizes who she is in light of who God is.
“For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name.
She recognizes that it is God that has done the work in her. He is the mighty one. And hIs name is holy
She recognizes God has been merciful. She didn’t get what she deserved
“And His mercy is upon generation after generation Toward those who fear Him.
