This question of balance has been the cause of many conflicts, even to divide churches.
But that should not surprise us, since it was one of the first conflicts among the early churches – .
We want to consider how to balance our emphasis between salvation by faith and salvation through obedience.
Both are concepts supported by scripture.
I) Salvation by faith
This was the direct statement of Paul to the Ephesians, specifically denying that works can be the basis of our salvation, so that none can be proud of their salvation
This is in the greater context of the salvation of the Gentile Christians in Ephesus from their former worldliness into reconciliation with God (and the Jewish Christians) through the cross –
It is the theme of many of Paul’s epistles to churches – ; ; – which is widely regarded as the most comprehensive writing on salvation
Galatians is similar to Romans, but with a stronger reproof against those who seek salvation through their works – ; ; ; ;
Other letters refer to our salvation by faith, even if it is not the main theme – ; ; ;
II) Salvation through obedience
This is also from direct statement – – those who do not obey the gospel will pay the penalty of eternal destruction away from God
It is also a major theme of Paul’s epistles – ; ;
Even one of the strongest passages for salvation by faith, speaks of the role of our works –
James was neglected by Martin Luther because of his emphasis upon being justified by works – , , ,
III) These concepts are not exclusive
We are saved by our faith, which is demonstrated by our works –
Works animate (give life) to our faith –
Faith is the motive; works are the result – ; ;
Both are emphasized in different contexts
Concl: Faith and obedience are vital parts of our salvation.
But which should I emphasize in my circumstances?
I believe whichever make you the most nervous.
