ABIDING IN GOD’S LOVE
AS THE FATHER HATH LOVED ME, SO HAVE I LOVED YOU: CONTINUE YE IN MY LOVE.
INTRODUCTION
Are you familiar with ? It is often referred to as the Love chapter. And it highlights the many facets of pure godly love.
Love is patient, Love is kind, Love is not boastful or rude.
These are familiar and reassuring words. Often we are invited to insert our own name into the wording of the chapter, to personalizing it.
Like this: Jerry is not easily provoked, Jerry thinks no evil, Jerry bears all things.
But this is what I want to ask you “ Do you not think that those same qualities also apply to God and His love for us.
That His love for us we can rest assured that God’s love for us is patient, His love for us is kind.
In His great love for us, God bears with us and rejoices when we choose good things. Love never fails, and neither does God.
When you want to learn about love, you must start at the source.
Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.
OF GOD; AND EVERY ONE THAT LOVETH IS BORN OF GOD,
But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
AND KNOWETH GOD.
Everyone believes that love is important but love is usually thought of as a feeling. In reality, love is a choice and an action.
HE THAT LOVETH NOT KNOWETH NOT GOD; FOR GOD IS LOVE.
Everyone believes that love is important but love is usually thought of as a feeling. In reality, love is a choice and an action.
God is the source of our love: God loved us enough to sacrifice His Son for us.
God is the source of our love: God loved us enough to sacrifice His Son for us.
Jesus is our example of what it means to love: everything He did in life and death was supremely loving.
The Holy Spirit give us the power to love, He lives in our hearts and makes us more and more like Christ.
God’s love always involves a choice and an action, and our love should be like His.
My question is “ How well do you display your love for God in the choices you make and the actions you take?”
Now listen to this: John says, God is love, not love is God. Our world with its shallow and selfish view of love has turned these words around and contaminated our understanding of love.
The world thinks that love is what makes a person feel good and that it’s all right to sacrifice moral principles and other’s rights in order to obtain such love.
But that isn’t real love; it is the exact opposite – that is selfishness.
God is not that kind of love. Real love is like God, who is holy, just and perfect. If we truly know God, then we will love as God does.
God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him.
This is real love—not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.
HEREIN IS LOVE, NOT THAT WE LOVED GOD, BUT THAT HE LOVED US, AND SENT HIS SON TO BE THE PROPITIATION FOR OUR SINS.
I want you to look at how God explains His love:
ABIDING IN GOD’S LOVE
God is explaining His love:
1. Why God creates, because He loves, He creates people to love.
2. Why God cares, because He loves us, he cares for sinful people.
3. Why we are free to choose, God wants a loving response from us.
4. Why Christ died, His love for us caused Him to seek a solution to the problem of sin.
5. Why we receive eternal life, God’s love expresses itself to us forever.
What we must understand is that nothing sinful or evil can exist in God’s presence. He is absolute goodness. He cannot overlook, condone, or excuse sin as though it never happened.
He loves us, but His love does not make Him morally lax.
If we trust in Christ, then we will not have to bear the penalty for our sins.
CHRIST CARRIED THE BURDEN OF OUR SINS. HE WAS NAILED TO THE CROSS, SO THAT WE WOULD STOP SINNING AND START LIVING RIGHT. BY HIS CUTS AND BRUISES YOU ARE HEALED. (CEV)
We will be acquitted by His atoning sacrifice.
EVERYONE WAS GOING TO BE PUNISHED BECAUSE ADAM SINNED. BUT BECAUSE OF THE GOOD THING THAT CHRIST HAS DONE, GOD ACCEPTS US AND GIVES US THE GIFT OF LIFE. (CEV)
So what does God’s love for you look like to you?
And How did God demonstrate his love for us?
BUT GOD SHOWED HOW MUCH HE LOVED US BY HAVING CHRIST DIE FOR US, EVEN THOUGH WE WERE SINFUL.
Now look at this:
Now look at this:
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! WE GLADLY SUFFER, BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT SUFFERING HELPS US TO ENDURE.
BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT SUFFERING HELPS US TO ENDURE.
AND ENDURANCE BUILDS CHARACTER, WHICH GIVES US A HOPE
GIVES US A HOPE
THAT WILL NEVER DISAPPOINT US. ALL OF THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE GOD HAS GIVEN US THE HOLY SPIRIT, WHO FILLS OUR HEARTS WITH HIS LOVE. (CEV)
When we are saved God gives us the Holy Spirit who fills our hearts with His love.
Not only does God fill our heart with His love but He calls us:
THINK HOW MUCH THE FATHER LOVES US. HE LOVES US SO MUCH THAT HE LETS US BE CALLED HIS CHILDREN, AS WE TRULY ARE. BUT SINCE THE PEOPLE OF THIS WORLD DID NOT KNOW WHO CHRIST IS, THEY DON'T KNOW WHO WE ARE. (CEV)
God calls us His children.
You see, God pours out His love on His children. It is more than bucketful, it is more than pond-fuls, it is more than lake-fuls. It is more than ocean-fuls.
We are drenched in it, Saturated by it, soaked to the skin. But we cannot be soaked to the very soul if we do not drink it in.
Now look at God’s love for us in:
SOME TIME AGO, THE LORD APPEARED TO ME AND TOLD ME TO SAY: ISRAEL, I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU; THAT'S WHY I'VE BEEN SO PATIENT AND KIND.(CEV)
This is what amazing, God is changeless.
This is what amazing, God is changeless.
FOR I AM THE LORD, I CHANGE NOT;
It is not strange to discover that God’s love is changeless. It is everlasting, eternal never ending always, ceaseless unchangeable, forever, ever after.
When you are out on the ocean, you are completely surrounded by water, when you are up in an airplane there is nothing but clouds and sky. Astronauts who leave our atmosphere are surrounded by stars.
So with that in mind. What surrounds believers?
THAT CHRIST MAY DWELL IN YOUR HEARTS BY FAITH; THAT YE, BEING ROOTED AND GROUNDED IN LOVE,
FAITH; THAT YE, BEING ROOTED AND GROUNDED IN LOVE,
MAY BE ABLE TO COMPREHEND WITH ALL SAINTS WHAT IS THE BREADTH, AND LENGTH, AND DEPTH, AND HEIGHT;
WHAT IS THE BREADTH, AND LENGTH, AND DEPTH, AND
HEIGHT;
AND TO KNOW THE LOVE OF CHRIST, WHICH PASSETH KNOWLEDGE, THAT YE MIGHT BE FILLED WITH ALL THE FULNESS OF GOD. (kjv)
Over and around us, as far as the eye can see and beyond. God’s love for us is so great, we cannot comprehend.
Paul prays that believers might root themselves into love and draw strength from it.
He wants us to catch a glimpse of something too big to grasp. It is beyond measure. It is unsearchable in it magnitude. For the love of God is as big as God. Because God is love.
Now to abide in Christ’s love is to make His love our home. Settle in, Set up housekeeping. Make ourselves comfortable.
When you abide somewhere, you live there. You grow familiar with the surrounding. Jesus abided in God’s love.
When you abide somewhere, you live there. You grow familiar with the surrounding. Jesus abided in God’s love.
We are invited to abide in Christ’s. By doing so, in this world we are like Him.
By doing so, in this world we are like him.
IF WE TRULY LOVE OTHERS AND LIVE AS CHRIST DID IN THIS WORLD, WE WON'T BE WORRIED ABOUT THE DAY OF JUDGMENT. (cev)
Now let us look at what Jesus’ idea of abiding consist of:
ABIDE IN ME, AND I IN YOU. AS THE BRANCH CANNOT BEAR FRUIT OF ITSELF, EXCEPT IT ABIDE IN THE VINE; NO MORE CAN YE, EXCEPT YE ABIDE IN ME.
CANNOT BEAR FRUIT OF ITSELF, EXCEPT IT ABIDE IN THE
VINE; NO MORE CAN YE, EXCEPT YE ABIDE IN ME.
I AM THE VINE, YE ARE THE BRANCHES: HE THAT ABIDETH IN ME, AND I IN HIM, THE SAME BRINGETH FORTH MUCH FRUIT: FOR WITHOUT ME YE CAN DO NOTHING.
According to Jesus, the branch models His definition of abiding. The branch must be connected to the vine in order to live, grow and bear fruit.
Without the vine a branch is useless. It can do nothing. We need to hang on to Christ as a branch clutches the vine. If we don’t we go thirsty.
Let’s abide in God’s love.
