The Lord hates every liar,
but he is the friend of all
who can be trusted.
Be sensible and don’t tell
everything you know—
only fools spread
foolishness everywhere.
17 May
God is truth, and he cannot tolerate those who lie. The trustworthy are pleasing in his sight. When they interact with others, they can be counted on to be honest. In our communication, if we cause another to believe something other than the truth, we have lied. At the same time, the wise must often, for the sake of love, refrain from divulging all that she knows. It isn’t always helpful to reveal everything, and if our disclosure of information will harm another, then it’s often best to remain silent. The fool, on the other hand, feels the need to let everyone know when she’s been wronged. The Lord is watching all that goes on among his people. He sees the one who moves from person to person, tearing down others in an attempt to build herself up. Just as a parent will deal with disobedience in her children, God will discipline those who cause harm with their words.
(The Message)
22 God can’t stomach liars; he loves the company of those who keep their word.
23 Prudent people don’t flaunt their knowledge; talkative fools broadcast their silliness.
