Mighty God

week 2 of He is called, what do we need to understand from today, God is Mighty, yes; but what can we take from this?
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
A)
I want to remind us of who we are because of who he is.
OK so it’s Christmas & so often in the busyness of the season, buying presents, putting up decorations, getting sermons prepared, carol services sorted all the different things that you do for Christmas ready & although you may be a Christian & know the reason for the season, the stress & strain, maybe Christmas reminds you of a past hurt, but it can all make the reason go down the list of priorities, we forget who he is & in that, we forget who we are & who we carry.
So our scripture for this series, He is called
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Who He is, last week wonderful counselor, this week, Mighty God. There are lots of scripture that back this up. I want to take us on a journey, our God is Mighty, He is powerful & His power is at work in you, for you & through you.
So lets start, God is all knowing, He is everywhere & He is all powerful.
3 words omniscient, Omnipresent, Omnipotent.
The omniscience of God is the principle that God is all-knowing; that He encompasses all knowledge of the universe past, present, and future. In the beginning, God created the world and everything in it, including knowledge.
The omniscience of God is the principle that God is all-knowing; that He encompasses all knowledge of the universe past, present, and future. In the beginning, God created the world and everything in it, including knowledge.
At first look, the idea of the omniscience of God may seem to be a simple concept—God knows everything. But the more we study the Bible, the more we come to understand what an incredible truth it is. tells us, “He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.” Imagine. God not only knows how many stars are in the universe, but knows each of them by name. An Australian study a few years ago put the number of stars we can see at 70,000 million million million, or the number 70 followed by 22 zeroes. That means there are more stars in the sky than there are grains of sand on all the beaches and deserts of the world! What an incredible picture of the omniscience of God.
God is all all-knowing in the sense that he is aware of the past, present, and future. ... Omnipresence means all-present. It means that God is capable of being everywhere at the same time. It means his divine presence encompasses the whole of the universe.
God is omnipresent, filling heaven and earth with His character.
Jeremiah 23:23–24 ESV
“Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord.
Jeremiah 23:23
God is not some localized God from whom we remain concealed. Upon His heavenly throne, His eye is still as keen. Nearness and distance make no difference in what God sees or does.
A W Tozer says “Since He has at His command all the power in the universe, The Lord God omnipotent can do anything as easily as anything else. All His acts are done without effort. He expends no energy that must be replenished. His self-sufficiency makes it unnecessary for Him to look outside of Himself for a renewal of strength. All the power required to do all that He wills to do lies in undiminished fullness in His own infinite being.”
It is important to note that God cannot do anything that is contradictory or that is contrary to His nature. For example, God cannot lie, even though He has the power to do anything.
Hebrews 6:18 ESV
so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.
So what we need to understand is that because God is who he is, we can be who we are meant to be, not people of flesh but people of Spirit.
3 things God is at work in you.
Philippians 2:12–13 ESV
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Philippians 3:12–13 ESV
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,
“For it is God who works in you” & we take comfort in this; “Grace all-sufficient dwells in you, believer. There is a living well within you springing up; use the bucket, then; keep on drawing; you will never exhaust it; there is a living source within.” -Spurgeon
philippians 3
We take comfort in this;
So God works in you; The idea is that since God has done & is doing a work in us, that means we have a greater responsibility to work diligently with fear & trembling regarding our own salvation & walk with Jesus, Gods work in us increases our responsibility. We are not saved & so we just sit back & enjoy the ride, no we are to also pick up the oars & row the rescue vessel. People who take God’s sovereignty & working & use that as an excuse for doing nothing are like the lazy servant in talents.
What we need to do is use our understanding of God’s sovereignty & omnipotence as a motivation for greater & more dedicated service to Him. It’s not about what he has done for you but about who He is.
Isaiah 40:29–31 ESV
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:29
He give us His great power, He gives power to the weak & to him who has no strength, He increases strength. It says that those who wait on the Lord, we receive as we wait on the Lord, but that’s not about just sitting about waiting for God to do something.
We need to be people that don’t live as our old self, who we used to be, we need to be people that seek Him, live for Him.
Renew means to change, change from our old self, people of the flesh to our new self, abiding in Him, part with Him. if we are born again then we are a new creation, the problem is we like the old one so much we want to carry that identity all the time & not walk in our new one, it’s like the Isrealites God could take them out of Egypt but he could take Egypt out of them, they still kept worshiping idols.
We are to move forward in His strength.
Now the order of this scripture can seem wrong. fly then run then walk. where we normally learn the other way around.
Listen: first we soar up into Heavenly places in Jesus
Ephesians 2:6 ESV
and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
Then we set ourselves to run the race
Hebrews 12:1 ESV
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Then we are in a good place to walk the walk.
Colossians 2:6 ESV
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,
Colossians 2:6
We are who we are because of who He is & He is at work through you.
Acts 1:8 ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1
He says wait, He doesn’t want the disciples or us doing anything without being connected to Him, doesn’t want us acting in our own strength, He wants us to be people of Spirit.
If we are living for ourselves, of course we can do good things, help people but we are witnesses of ourselves, loving people from our own example, from our experience. Getting offended when people don’t respond well, getting so tired of people that we don’t react well, because it all comes from ourselves, when if we are of the Spirit then we are one with Jesus & everything we do is because of Jesus in us.
