Radical Commitment
Radical Commitment
What is an appeal? It is a legal term that means the same thing as someone pleading or begging you to do something with urgency. This is exactly what Paul is doing here in this passage that he is pleading with us to sacrifice our living selves to the righteousness of God the Father and not to be what everyone says that you should be. When Paul is talking about the mercies of God he is being expressive in explaining that we have the mercies of God upon us and that God continues to have compassion on us despite how horrible we tend to continue to be. Paul is simply stating that this is an argument. Saying that because we have the mercies of God on our side that we need to be obedient to Him and His will for our lives. We should put our agenda on the side and live with praising God in everything we do. When we do this then this will be considered our worship to God.
Have you ever had to make a commitment to something that you weren’t 100% on board with? How about in school, with your parents, or even with your siblings or friends?
Like making a commitment to a sports-team? Have to get up earlier for practice. Making the honor roll? You have to commit to making incredible grades on all your work, which means more studying time and less time with your friends. Even to listening to your parents. It always isn’t fun doing what they are telling you to do, but because we love them we do, right? Just a side note, they most times know better than us in lots of things in this life because they have been there and have done it before us. It may not be exactly the same as us, but but they have had to deal with most of the same things that we deal with today. Most times it may not seem like they know anything, but I promise that they do. I am 34 years old and there are things that I wish that I had listened to my parents about, because the lessons that they were teaching me at that age are affecting me still to this day.
What does it mean to be Radical? It means that if you are truly a radical person, it means that you actually believe in your commitments. Christians believe that commitment should always lead us to strong actions. This means that we should act on what we say we believe in. Don’t just say that you believe in Jesus and then go around the corner and do something that is not appropriate in His eyes. That’s like being a hypocrite and we all know that’s a sin, right?
For example; Most of you all know the story of Jesus going to the cross right? Well this is a story of a person/God believing in what He believes and knew 100% that He died for what He knew was right? Even Jesus was in Gethsemane praying To the Father asking Him to let the cup pass from Him. Meaning that He knew what was to come, but He knew that His commitment to fulfill His Father’s will was to bring Himself to death as a sacrifice for each one of us.
