The second ending of Mark is not inspired.
Mark 16:
A. The earliest manuscripts do not include verses 9-20
[Some of the earliest mss conclude with 16:8.]
Illus: As believers we want to hold to the Word of God.
We want to say God’s word is truthful without error.
Just because this footnote is here and your bible says, that the earliest manuscripts do not contain verses 9-20 does not mean that the bible has errors.
We believe that the original autograph, the original documents, as God spoke through the writers are without error.
That mean that when mark penned his gospel account, every word was true.
If someone added an ending to the book of mark, then we need to call it what it is, an addition that is not from God.
Because of Archeology, we have found older more reliable copies of the book of mark.
When the bible was recorded a scribe would write word for word what was in the Bible.
Often they would make notes in the margins.
What most likely happened with the book of Mark is that a scribe unsettled by Mark’s abrupt ending left notes at the end of the document resolving the tension that Mark left.
Unfortunately, the scribe who then picked up that copy of scripture did not distinguish between God’s word, and the scribe’s reflections writing them as if they were all God’s.
The copies of Markan manuscripts which include verses 9-20 date to around 15th to 16th century.
The copies of Markan manuscripts which do not include the ending are much older.
A copy of mark found in a monastery on Mt.
Sianai dates back to the 4th century.
The other copy called Codex Vaticanus dates back to around 325.
We trust the copies of God’s word that are closest to the original manuscripts.
The goal of translation is to get as close to the original autograph as possible… because the Word of God spoken in Hebrew and Greek to authors is infallible.
B. Verses 9-20 are a patchwork of the other gospels and acts.
[9 Early on the first day of the week, after he had risen, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. 10 She went and reported to those who had been with him, as they were mourning and weeping.
11 Yet, when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe it.
This portion of Mark’s ending was taken from where Luke share the stories of the disciples fear and their first encounter at the tomb with the angels.
Luke was written after mark.
THE LONGER ENDING OF MARK: APPEARANCES OF THE RISEN LORD
12 After this, he appeared in a different form to two of them walking on their way into the country.
13 And they went and reported it to the rest, who did not believe them either.
This portion of Mark’s ending was taking as well from describing what is commonly known as the Road to Emmaus appearance.
14 Later he appeared to the Eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table.
He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who saw him after he had risen.

He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who saw him after he had risen.
15 Then he said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes;, if they should drink anything deadly, it will not harm them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will get well.”

This caries the idea that Matthew, and Acts portray in their commission accounts.
All written after mark.

This is referring to and the story of Paul being bitten by a snake on the Island of Malta.
Again written after the book of mark.

LUKE
THE DEDICATION TO THEOPHILUS
1 Many have undertaken to compile a narrative about the events that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as the original eyewitnesses and servants of the word handed them down to us. 3 It also seemed good to me, since I have carefully investigated everything from the very first, to write to you in an orderly sequence, most honorable Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things about which you have been instructed.,
GABRIEL PREDICTS JOHN’S BIRTH
5 In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest of Abijah’s division named Zechariah.
His wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
6 Both were righteous in God’s sight, living without blame according to all the commands and requirements of the Lord.
7 But they had no children because Elizabeth could not conceive, and both of them were well along in years.
8 When his division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9 it happened that he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and burn incense.
10 At the hour of incense the whole assembly of the people was praying outside.
11 An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense.
12 When Zechariah saw him, he was terrified and overcome with fear.
13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard.
Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him There will be joy and delight for you, and many will rejoice at his birth.
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord and will never drink wine or beer.
He will be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb.
16 He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.
17 And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.”
18 “How can I know this?” Zechariah asked the angel.
