Matthew 7:21–23 ESV
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
matt 7:21-

The Set Up:

We kind of wrap up the Sermon on the Mount in the main text for today. And in an unintentional way, and without asking the Senior Pastor’s permission, but in the Kiaros of God. So let us look at the context.
We have to enter through the Narrow Gate. ()
The week before last, Senior Pastor preached on getting on through the door. We had to make the effort to get in through the door.. to agonize through it. Meaning, that it will not be easy, but we can get through it.
Good Tree = good fruit
There will be false prophets, and they will be know by their bad fruit. A thornbush cannot give grapes.
You will know the prophets by their fruit.

I don’t know you!

Matt 7:21-
Matthew 7:21–23 NASB95
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
Matthew 7:21–23 RVR60

Intro

Have you ever thought you knew a person, but it turned out that you didn’t? In fact, it turns out you were just acquaintances with the person. As it turns out, your relationship was pretty superficial.
Here’s the thing, perhaps you had shared the dinner table with this person, you spent time together, went to ball games, watched each other’s kids, you may have even slept under the same roof. But that person still had secrets, a hidden agenda, divided loyalties, perhaps they even had malas manas!

Not Let In

Jesus concludes the sermon on the mount by noting that not everyone that claims His name will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. In fact Jesus proclaims that He never knew them. So now we are presented with folks who thought they knew Jesus, people who claimed Him, and yet they were unknown to Jesus.
This is worthy of further examination. After all, here is a group of folks who thought they had gained entry into the kingdom and Jesus has just turned the tables on them. Let it not be so with us. That after a lifetime of preaching, we find ourselves not let in to the Kingdom.

Unknown!

Who are these people that Jesus did not Know? What did the life of these people look like to receive such a sharp repudiation from Christ himself?
Matthew 7:21–22 NASB95
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’
And Luke further says..
Matthew 7:21–27 NASB95
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’ 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 “The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”

Luke 13:26 NASB95

Luke 13:26 NTV
26 Entonces ustedes dirán: “Pero comimos y bebimos contigo, y enseñaste en nuestras calles”.
Lord, Lord!
Lord, Lord!
We should not take this as folks merely paying lip service to Christ. The commentators agree that this was an emphatic pronouncement of the Lordship of Christ. These people believe and profess. These are not folks “outside” the church. These are folks who consider themselves to be disciples, expecting entry into the kingdom.
Admirable: Moreover, the kind of Christian profession Jesus describes at the end of the Sermon appears—at least on the surface—to be wholly admirable Stott, J. R. W., & Stott, J. R. W. (1985). polite- Cortés
orthodox- in that it identifies the divinity of Christ.
fervent!- enthusiastic entusiasta
It’s public
a surprised exclamation- almost like BUT LORD LORD!
Accompanied by Supernatural evidence: Prophecy, Exorcism, Miracles… In Jesus name.
These are not simple deeds. In fact these are regarded as perhaps some of the greater deeds that could testify of a believers commitment.

These are selected as three examples of the highest services rendered to the Christian cause, and through the power of Christ’s own name

Prophesy: publicly taught; inspired and authoritative teaching.
to prophesy (inspired) v. — to make a representative declaration of the mind, will, or knowledge of a god, as in his agency, under his influence, or indwelt by him.
to prophesy (inspired) v. — to make a representative declaration of the mind, will, or knowledge of a god, as in his agency, under his influence, or indwelt by him. - Bible Sense Lexicon, Logos
Cast out Devils & Miracles: These are works of power. Supernatural works.
1539 δύναμις (dynamis): The same greek word used in - meaning ability, power, mighty deed.
miracle ⇔ power n. — a miracle especially understood as the manifestation of great power. - Bible Sense Lexicon, Logos
We ate and drank with you, you taught in our neighborhood.
Here there is an attempt to claim intimacy with Christ. This is as if to say, Jesus… we hung out together. We were buddies, you hung out in my neck of the woods. Surely we knew each other. We sat at tables together.
We did it IN YOUR NAME
Luke has some complimentary verses to these.
Moreover, there even seems to be some sense of sincerity when the claim is made that it was done in the authority of Christ.
Surely all of these aught to be evidence that someone is qualified to be in the Kingdom. As a matter of fact, Jesus just said by their fruits they shall be known. How is then that these folks who openly, in an orthodox manner, and publicly proclaim the name of Christ; people who ate and drank with Him, who cast out demons, did miracles, and prophesied in His name, would not gain entry to heaven? Where does this let some our theological concepts of salvation through faith rest, if people who profess faith will still not get in?

Never Known

These people will not gain entry because they were never known. It’s not that they intended to lie about their discipleship, it’s that they failed to live up to the level of obedience to the will of God.
Matthew: An Introduction and Commentary xi. Warnings against Spurious Discipleship (7:13–27)

Nor is there any suggestion in vv. 21–23 that it is insincere; they are self-deceived, unaware (like the ‘goats’ of 25:44) that their discipleship does not match up to Jesus’ criteria of obedience (v. 21) and personal relationship (v. 23).

In all their activity, they had failed to know the will of the father, and failed to enter into a personal relationship with him.
BUT HOW?
As to prophesy: Did not Balaam & Caiaphas prophesy.
Balaam could not pronounce the curse upon the people of Isreal, instead God compelled him to prophesy blessing on His people
Caiaphas
John 11:51–52 NASB95
51 Now he did not say this on his own initiative, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
John 11:51–52 RVR60
As to casting out demons: Judas cast out demons and he was a son of perdition.
As to working of miracles:
Matthew 24:24 NASB95
24 “For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.
Matthew 24:24 NTV
Paul himself teaches us that it is possible to speak tounges, prophesy, and move mountains.. but without love, we are nothing
because, if we do not know love, we cannot know God, because He is love.
Matthew Henry makes an interesting observation here. Note that these are not works of charity or piety. But that these are accounts of wonderful works.

Observe, That which their heart was upon, in doing these works, and which they confided in, was the wonderfulness of them. Simon Magus wondered at the miracles (Acts 8:13), and therefore would give any money for power to do the like. Observe, They had not many good works to plead

Could it be, that these folks fell in love with the wonders of God, instead of the God of wonders.
R.T. France, in his commentary says that these were only superficial disciples. In fact he call their claim to discipleship a “spurious profession” profesión espuria. That is to say a confession that has an illegitimate birth (bastard). It is a fatherless discipleship. Their discipleship lacked practical obedience.
These folks had dead faith. Theirs is unrepentant, disobedient faith.

Faith and Works

James 2:17–18 NASB95
17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. 18 But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”
James 2
James 2:17–18 RVR60
James 2:21–22 NASB95
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 22 You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected;
James 2:21–22 RVR60
James 2:26 NASB95
26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
James 2:26 RVR60
When James talks about works here, he is referring to obedience, the following of the will of God. Abraham didn’t just believe God, he obeyed God. He obeyed God when He said move, he obeyed when God said bring me your son.
These that Jesus doesn’t know are those who never knew the will of God. These are folks who could profess Christ as Lord, but did not have the relationship with Him that is needed to know His will.
There’s no love in these peoples faith. They lack the love that brings them into deep relationship with God. A relationship that reveals His heart for the believer.

Goats and Virgins

These who do not gain entry are like 5 Virgins and a flock of goats who are not let in.
10 Virgins: 5 with their light on, 5 with their lights out.
These were all dressed and ready to go. All 10 had been invited to the party.
But only 5 were lit up.
The other 5 were not ready to let their light shine upon the world.
They were not being the light that they were called to be.
On judgement day, some will be counted as goats and cast away.
The sheep cared for the hungry, the naked, the sick, the stranger, the imprisoned
The goats did not.
Because they failed to do this good that the sheep had done, they were cast away.

I cant love my neighbor, if I don’t love God
If I love God, I must love my neighbor
James says what if...
James 2:15–17 NASB95
15 If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? 17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.
James 2:15–17 RVR60
james 2.16
What if we didn’t do the good we knew we ought to have done....
James 4:17 NASB95
17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
James 4:17 RVR60
17 y al que sabe hacer lo bueno, y no lo hace, le es pecado.
In our inaction; we may be full of theology, preaching, miracles, and we may even claim a fellowship with the church, but we also show that we are void of real relationship with Christ. Otherwise we would have done the good we should have done.

Let it not be that we arrive at the judgment seat only to be rejected. Rejected because we convinced ourselves that our tounges, and good preaching, and outward “pious” lives were enough to get us entry to heaven.
Let it not be that we sincerely thought we were disciples, but we failed to have relational knowledge of him. That we to be like the Pharisees who sought eternal life in the scriptures, but rejected it when He stood before them, and so they did not know it either.
Let us not be spiritual pharisees, who become content in seeking the moving of God, but not the God of the Moving.
