Jesus loved to teach in parables.
We see this throughout the Gospels.
tells us that Jesus spoke in parables.
Gives us a quote from
This shows us that Jesus used this method to fulfill prophecy.
Jesus taught the disciples for 3 years.
During that time, He told them several things that were difficult teachings.
These are recorded in John’s gospel:
John 13:
A time was coming this would change.
We are fortunate to have God’s word to show when this happened:
This is a repetition of:
John
Jesus is sharing with His disciples that they will have DIRECT ACCESS to the Father.
This will come in addition to understanding.
Asking in the NAME OF JESUS coincides with His will, His character, and His mindset.
This truth does not negate the promise of Christ’s intercessory prayer on our behalf in overcoming sin.
1 John 2:1-2
Therefore, no prompting is needed by the Son - because the way has been cleared.
It was the love of the Father that initiated the purpose of the Son.
John Calvin wrote: “We have the heart of t God as soon as we place before Him the Name of His Son.”
The model for all Christian prayer is prayer to the Father through the Son.
Matthew Henry wrote: “The disciples of Christ are the beloved of God Himself, Christ not only turned away God’s wrath from us, and brought us into a covenant of peace and reconciliation, but purchased His favor for us and brought us in to a covenant of friendship.”
Why does the Father us?
Because we have loved the Son and believed He came from God.
In other words, when we are in Jesus, there is nothing physically we can do apart from expressing our faith through love.
As believers that love Christ, we can be assured that God loves us!
And because of that, we can boldly come to Him as children to a loving Father.
In one sentence, Jesus is summarizing His mission.
“Coming from the Father” declares His INCARNATION.
What is incarnation?
It is the full embodiment in the flesh.
“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” .
The phrase from that says, “and entered into the world” indicates the HUMILIATION of Jesus and His willingness to be a servant.
Acts
Hebrews
The phrase, “now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father” from shows His resurrection, His ascension, and exaltation.
echoes this mission statement:
This is a contrast to what the disciples has understood before.
They have acquired knowledge, but only a small glimpse.
The disciples begin to understand what Jesus had been conveying to them.
This is evident of what the Spirit can do in our lives.
The disciples recognized the omniscience of Jesus.
What is omniscience?
It is His ALL KNOWING.
How did the disciples experience this?
They did so first hand.
Nothing validates faith more than a first hand experience.
We can say of His power, it works in me.
We can say of His love, it has been felt in me.
The power of Christ not only proves His divine mission, but also His divine power and His divine person.
He knows all of our thoughts and what is in our hearts.
Hebrews 4:12-13
has a stern warning about this:
John 16:
Hebrews
A better translation seems to be “Do you NOW believe?”
There is a tone of the idea, “It’s about time!” and a sense of “Yes!!!
You know believe, but soon you won’t.”
Jesus is checking their excitement.
Sometimes we get caught up in the moment but fail to see the big picture.
The next statement sheds much light on this thought: Can we become too comfortable in our faith?
Jesus is always real.
He gives us the truth.
Scattered refers to a couple of fulfilled prophecies.
Ezekiel
When these prophecies become fulfilled, they show Jesus being alone.
“Yet, I am not alone, for my Father is with me.”
Jesus is reiterating :
Again, there are a few Old Testament prophecies that show us this.
God was with Him.
Psalm 89:
God has preserved Him.
Isaiah
God has emboldened Him.
We can learn here that even when we are seemingly fully alone, the Father is still with us.
John Calvin wrote: “We don’t render due honor to God, unless we deem Him alone all-sufficient.”
What do you think that means?
Next, the last verse of this chapter, we see the promise of peace.
It is the will of Christ that His disciples have peace.
Peace in Christ is the only true peace.
No Peace, No Christ.
Know Peace, Know Christ.
The word of Christ is peace.
Peace is on the fruit of His lips:
Isaiah
What does it mean to “take heart?”
It means to DARE, BE BOLD, BE OF GOOD COURAGE, TRUST, RELY, TO GO OUT BRAVELY TO
