Jacob mourned for his son Joseph.
We don’t know how to mourn.
Darryl told me Josh’s mom passed away and he was taking it hard. When I came over, Josh was in a dark room with his brother and cousin. I came in and sat on the floor, like I was one of Job’s friends. Job’s friends saw Job’s grief and sat in silence with him seven days. Josh was unconsolable.
American grief is handled with a beer or strong drink. We tell our loved ones, don’t cry.” We try our method’s at consolation, but we don’t drink the cup of grief to the dregs. Someone said, the problem with Americans is they don’t know how to grieve. In ancient times, you changed your clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes. People brought you “Mourners bread, while mourners came to your house and wept aloud.
Hosea 9:4 NIV
They will not pour out wine offerings to the Lord, nor will their sacrifices please him. Such sacrifices will be to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat them will be unclean. This food will be for themselves; it will not come into the temple of the Lord.
Mourning takes time:
Mourning takes time:
Deuteronomy 34:8 NIV
The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over.
Why is it important to mourn? Because if you cut off the experience, you would never fully heal.
Why? Because if you cut off the experience, you would never fully heal.
David mourned for the child of Bathsheba....
In ancient times mourning was like a national calamity. the Bible says, “In the year King Uzziah died I saw the Lord.” The King of Judah died and Isaiah the prophet came closer to God.
Mother Clementina’s death is worse than a national disaster. Why do I say this? Because there are few people brought to this earth by God who offered so great a testimony of love and faith.
We share this scripture every Mother’s Day as a tribute to mothers. We actually limit the theological importance of this passage.
What the Lord declares is a godly woman is far beyond description – all the things she does, all the things she is requires scripture to explain.
God is saying a godly woman possesses the key role in the family. I believe that your wife and mother is a key.
If you can’t mourn for mother Clachar, then mourning itself is of no use.
If you can’t mourn for mother Clachar, then mourning itself is of no use.
God did not just give you a gift; God gave us a gift. This woman came from the strain Hannah, the mother of Samuel; Jochabed, the mother of Moses, and Mary, the mother of Jesus.
Who can find a virtuous woman?
Proverbs 31:10–31 KJV 1900
Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, So that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil All the days of her life. She seeketh wool, and flax, And worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants’ ships; She bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, And giveth meat to her household, And a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: With the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, And strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: Her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, And her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; Yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: For all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; Her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, When he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; And delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are her clothing; And she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; And in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, And eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, But thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: But a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; And let her own works praise her in the gates.
:
Let me highlight something else about this passage.
Jacob mourned for his son Joseph, He tore off his clothes; he put on sackcloth. He refused to be comforted by his children. He said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.”
Jesus Christ said, “Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
But notice something else…Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.
Notice that word, “Meanwhile.” While Jacob was grieving over his son, God was doing something else.
Joseph was not dead. His was still alive.
On Friday, when Jesus was crucified, his mother and family grieved, the Jewish leaders felt relief that the Jesus’ movement would be over, and disciples went into hiding, meanwhile, Jesus went down to the netherworld and preached to the souls in prison. He lead captivity captive, as he waited for Sunday morning.
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were preparing spices to anoint the dead body of Jesus, meanwhile, two angels stood at the time to declare Jesus had already risen from the dead.
We are grieving mother Clachar’s passage, meanwhile, she is in the presence of God, she is singing with angels. She is in her mansion in glory, she is wearing an everlasting robe of righteousness. She is sitting at the feet of Jesus.
Your mother is not dead. She has fallen asleep…
1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 KJV 1900
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
Joseph did something else. He went ahead of his family and prepared a way for them to survive the famine that would come to Egypt.
Josh,...
