1 John 2:1-2
My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the righteous one. He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.
1. The purpose of writing: So that the church might live free from sin.

My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the righteous one.
The purpose of writing is the key to unlocking what comes next. See, God doesn’t want us to be surrendered to our sin; instead, we are to be surrendered to Jesus and his Word, the Bible.
3 Primary Purposes of the Bible Being Written:
The Bible introduces us to God and His love.
The Bible is the ultimate love letter to a rebellious people.
The Bible demonstrates God’s intimacy with his creation.
The Bible testifies of God’s loving patience with people.
The Bible witnesses God’s loving punishment for rebellion.
The Bible proclaims God’s loving sacrifice for all the world.
The Bible shows God’s loving advocacy for the redeemed.
The Bible instructs us of God’s expectations.
The Bible explains what God’s standards are to be holy.
The Bible outlines the need for perfection, which we are incapable of as fallen people.
The Bible sets the only standard for salvation, admittance of sin, belief in the work of Jesus Christ, and confession of Jesus as Lord.
The Bible communicates the Word’s of God to us.
The Bible te
2. Reality of the world: We will sin but Jesus defends his coheirs.

3. The extent of Christ’s sacrifice: The Atonement is sufficient for the whole world to be saved but is limited to only those who believe.

He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.
After his anguish, he will see light and be satisfied.
By his knowledge,
my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will carry their iniquities.
Many not all is vitally important. John is not advocating for universalism. He is advocating that all have an opportunity because of the work of Christ.
This passage is sandwiched between two passages that speak against universalism. Listen to these words.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in him. If we say, “We have fellowship with him,” and yet we walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth. If we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say, “We have no sin,” we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
We can’t live lives full of sin, without conviction and confession, and truly call ourselves in fellowship with God nor can we claim we are sinless because God has told us that all are sinners in need of saving grace and faith.
John builds on this understanding in...
1 John 2:306
This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commands. The one who says, “I have come to know him,” and yet doesn’t keep his commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his word, truly in him the love of God is made complete. This is how we know we are in him: The one who says he remains in him should walk just as he walked.
