For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
Paul has gone to great lengths in the previous few verses to explain that the death of Christ is necessary for our salvation.
It was through that event in history that took someone like me who was an enemy of God to being reconciled.
We
This language here points to the understanding of a conflict.
It points to an understanding of a war.
Reconciliation is a war term.
It means to make peace.
That’s what Jesus was doing on the cross. He was making peace. He is our prince of Peace.
But he did more than that.
What I want you to see this morning our salvation is multi-faceted.
One aspect of our salvation is that Christ has made peace by his on the cross.
There was a holy requirement of wrath and punishment that has to be paid and Christ did that.
There is not one of us in here that
It wasn’t that God dismissed our charges. It was that Christ took the charges against us and bore the punishment in our place.
God will not just forget about the wrath that sin is owed.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
Romans 1
In other words, there is a righteous and just requirement of God’s wrath that has to be paid.
Paul in tells us this.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What we deserved and we are are rightfully owed is death.
So one aspect of Jesus’s purpose and reason for him coming is to die on the cross for our sins.
On the cross, he paid the debt that we owed in order to bring reconciliation.
We celebrate that. I don’t think you and I can truly celebrate Christmas, without also having Good Friday in mind.
The death of Christ is important and we will get there next week Lord willing.
Its not just that he died for us.
But tell us a little more about our salvation.
Listen again to what he says in verse 10.
“Reconciled through his death.” That is talking about the cross.
We are also according to verse 10:
“Saved by his life.” That is talking about something else altogether.
There’s something else going on here. in other words, Christ has done more for than just die for us.
Other people have died for us.
We celebrate Memorial Day because there are those who have given their lives for our freedom.
But it isn’t just that Jesus died for us.
He also was raised for us. Thats what it is what it means here in verse 1-
Look at again at verse 10 and the language there.
We WERE reconciled by his death. Past tense
In fact, many people have been born. Many people have died. Only Christ has lived perfectly.
We shall be saved by his life. Future tense
We are already starting to see Jesus has done more than just die on the cross.
It is also the fact THAT he is living after he died, that secures our salvation.
In fact, Paul makes a distinction here. We are reconciled at the cross at his death, and we are saved because he lives forever.
There is no reconciliation or peace with God without this.
I belabor that point because, at times our understanding of salvation is too shallow.
Someone asks us, how did Jesus save you?
“Well he died on the cross for me.”
Thats true, but he also lives now so that you can be saved.
There is more to Christmas than just celebrating the virgin birth.
there is more to Christmas than just celebrating the death of Christ.
At Christmas and at all times we need to celebrate Christ and ALL he done. And today the goal is to explain another aspect of that so that we can worship him more.
Look at verse 11… We are saved by his life.
Thats our reason for rejoicing.
verse 11 tells us that.
And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
We exult in God because we have been reconciled.
But theres a few more questions that need to be answered.
Like:
What else did he do?But how did he do it? How does one accomplish salvation for all believers?
Paul is going to explain all of this here.
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
Now there is a lot in that verse.
Let’s take it piece by piece.
Through one man sin entered the world. The reference here is to Adam. Adam, the first man, sinned. His sin in the garden brought sin into the world. Before that, he had not sinned. Adam and Eve were living in uninterrupted fellowship with God.
They were living in a perfect world. A world God himself said was very good.
but Adam took of the forbidden fruit and he brought death.
The verse goes on to say.
And so death spread to all men because all sinned.
This could be a little confusing.
What does he mean by that? All men sinned
This verse is teaching that
Adam as the first person created acted as our representatives in the garden.
This is what he means here when he says through one man sin entered the world, and so death spread to all men. This is why its not just Adam and Eve who die.
In fact, it says “death spread to all men because all sinned.”
Adam and Eve were our representatives. And they represented us perfectly.
So then, All humanity born after Adam, is born with a sin nature and they die.
The Bible is replete with examples of men after Adam who would continue to struggle with sin and die.
Cain- murdered his brother Abel
Noah got drunk
You and I deal with two unmistakable
Abraham lied.
for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
Isaac also lies to Abimelech.
Jacob was a deceiver.
Moses was a hot head.
Again, there is a lot here, but essentially what he is saying is this.
When sin entered the world through Adam, every person born after Adam died.
Nadab and Abihu were careless in worship.
Samson is seduced.
David covets, lusts, commits adultery and then murder.
Solomon, David’s son, accumulates many wives from foreign country and eventually turns away from his devotion to the one true and living God.
The list goes on and on and on.
And if we really need a wonderful example of people who struggle with sin and will one day die, lets just examine ourselves.
Through Adam, sin enters the world. As a result we all inherit a sin nature and we sin.
This is an important distinction to make this morning.
We are not sinners because we sin.
We sin because we are sinners.
We are born into this. its in our blood from Adam.
Its who we are at our core. Its not something outside of us, we are corrupted. Totally defiled and depraved.
The Bible makes this clear in many portions of Scripture.
We are conceived in sin.
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
David, even said to be, a man after God’s own heart, recognizes that at his core from the beginning he is sinful.
And this is true of all of us.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one; There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God; All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good, There is not even one.” “Their throat is an open grave, With their tongues they keep deceiving,” “The poison of asps is under their lips”; “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”; “Their feet are swift to shed blood, Destruction and misery are in their paths, And the path of peace they have not known.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Romans 3:
This is who we are in Adam.
Paul says in , We are children of wrath.
“Who can make the clean out of the unclean? No one!
Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead.
1 cor
Sin is not just something we do, its who we are in Adam.
Our human nature that we have inherited through Adam is sinful and brings condemnation.
Why am I making such a big deal about this?
Because, again, more than anything, I want you to appreciate Jesus more..
We are all born from Adam and by virtue of his representation of us and our own sin, we stand in front a Holy God with His wrath pointed straight at us.
In Adam, there is only condemnation.
So how is this problem fixed?
Adam was our representative. He failed. What does that mean? Are we left hopeless? In Adam, we are. If we seek to find hope in our own works we are.
And this is where we see something else that Jesus has come to do.
Its not just that he came to be born of a virgin. Though he was
Its not just that he came to die. Though he did
Look at verse 17-18 in
For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.
We’ve already gone through this…(Speed through this) Adam as our representative, brings us death and condemnation. And we are united to him by virtue of being born into this world. We are sinners in Adam. We die in Adam.
But God.
He sent his Son to be another representative.
Look again in verse 18
So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.
In Adam- Sin, condemnation, death.
In Jesus the complete opposite- Sin- Righteousness, Condemnation-justification (Mainly through the cross), and death- life (Mainly through the resurrection).
But how do we go from sin to righteousness?
Another major and essential aspect of Jesus’s work of salvation is his righteous life.
Also, a major and essential aspect of Jesus’s work of salvation is his righteous life.
Follow with me here.
Adam failed to lived righteously. He failed to live up to God’s holy requirement, and because of that eternal death is the rightful payment.
So yes we need Jesus to die for us. God’s wrath has to be satisfied. The payment has to be paid.
But we also need him to live for us.
We need him to live a righteous life.
We need him not only to please the wrath of God through his death.
We also need him to please the holiness of God through his life for us.
In other words, We need another representative to succeed in every way that Adam failed.
Thats exactly what Jesus did.
Look at verse 19
For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.
Adam’s disobedience brought sin and made us us all sinners.
Jesus’s obedience makes many righteous.
In salvation, not only is our sin placed on Jesus at the cross. But his righteous works and life are imputed to us.
Without his perfect life, we are not saved.
His birth and death mean nothing apart from him living righteously.
His righteous lif
The Bible tells us that he lived without sin.
For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
Paul tell us this in 2 corinthians 5
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
In fact, it was the righteous life of Christ that made the sacrifice he made on the cross acceptable.
knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
The sacrifice isn’t acceptable unless the lamb is spotless.
knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you
spotless.
And he was.
His birth.... miraculous.
C
His righteous life earned the favor of God for us.
His death atoned for our sin debt.
And his resurrection guarantees our life and victory.
IF WE ARE IN CHRIST...
The question we have to ask is:
Who are we in?
Are we in Christ?
Have we been granted righteousness, justification, and life through the complete work of Christ?
Are you continuously living in Adam?
Or Are we in Adam maintaining a lifestyle of sin, condemnation, and headed for death.
Paul says it clear else where.
For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
Where are you?
By yourself and without Christ, there is only death.
Your union with Adam is evident by your sinfulness.
But if you are saved today. If you are united with Christ. I want you to understand what he has done for you so that you can worship him fully and tell the whole Gospel.
Why am I saved?
I am saved because jesus, born of a virgin, lived righteously for me, He died for me, He rose for me, and he lives now for me.
We’ve got to open up the book. We’ve got to see what the Bible says. We’ve got to determine whether or not we are going to be theoretical inerrantists or if we are going to be a people submitted to God’s Word.
This Christmas, lets celebrate all he has done for us.
Will you believe and by faith be united to the representative that gives life?
