“And He will be called...”
Today we light the third candle of the advent season.
The first candle symbolizes hope and is called the "Prophet’s Candle."
The prophets of the Old Testament, especially Isaiah, waited in hope for the Messiah’s arrival.
The second candle represents faith and is called "Bethlehem’s Candle."
Micah had foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, which is also the birthplace of King David.
Now the third candle symbolizes joy and is called the "Shepherd’s Candle."
In the good news will cause great joy.
Now traditionally the color rose or pink points to joy.
Luke 2:8-
And the word they spread, we continue to spread today, and the joy it brought continues to bring us joy today.
Light candles and pray
Today is also the third week in our sermon series
“And he will be called...”
“And He will be called...
And He will be called...
Wonderful CounselorWonderful being Supernatural, beyond comprehension, Counselor bing one that gives advice, direction, instruction and comfort.
Wonderful Counselor
His Counsel ie His Word (The Bible), more than a suggestion Now today we move to the next description of character, the next name listed that He will be called,
Mighty God - El Gibbor
He is my Strong mighty powerful heroic God
Jesus our Mighty God who supplies for our greatest need, has always been within reach at the moment of your greatest need.
And He Always Has been and always will be.
Which leads us right into todays focus
Everlasting Father
Let’s read together
The nation is divided and the northern section has been taken over, the people are in need of Hope, Faith, Joy, and a prophet of the Lord, Isaiah steps in and gives a word, that would be a source of all of that, a prophecy of the coming Messiah.
See they needed a ruler, a Kingly ruler that would do everything an ideal king would do:
Lead
Provide
Protect
Establish
You have to love this prophecy of a King, that would come first as a child “and the Government will be on his shoulders” a king.
yet there is no need to call him a King, but to describe His greatness that describes other kings weaknesses.
It can be seen as a jab at the short fallings of the other kings of that day.
Speaking of kings of that day… one of His greatness attributes is his everlasting rule.
See they didn’t just need a king to sit on a throne for a while then be overturned, or run out, or killed, or just pass away.
There was a need for a forever King.
Ps
El The God pointing to the Messiah, Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
The increase and the ruling with justice and righteousness forever.
Hence He will be called Everlasting Father
Now at first glance this could be seen as problematic, in the area that we looked at last week, in the Trinity.
If this child born, son given, is pointing to the Messiah, and we understand and believe that to be Jesus, as the Son of God.
One of the 3 persons in the Trinity, Father Son, and Holy Spirit.
How can the Son be the Father?
Well its only problematic if you think that this is referring to His relation to the rest of the trinity, but in fact thats not what the reference is pointing to.
See its unto us, unto us that this Child is born that the Son is given.
So the reference then is to us, but not nessessarly the relation as one might think.
See the Bible is so deep and so impactful and so rich in meaning, we can look at this term in a number of different ways.
First Everlasting Father - Father of Eternity.
See in the States people will often refer to George Washington as the father of the country.
Here in Canada we have the fathers of confederation
John A. Mcdonald is commonly referred to as the chief architect of Confederation.
Joesph (Joey) R. Smallwood is considered a father of confederation.
being that he was the leader to sign Newfoundland into Canada.
These men are referred to as father because they are the originators, there in the beginning of something.
The Everlasting Father or the Father or Eternity, see much the same was the custom among the Jews as with us now, In the commentary “Be Comforted” by Warren W. Wiersbe he states this about the Everlasting Father terminology
Among the Jews, the word “father” means “originator” or “source.”
For example, Satan is the “father [originator] of lies” (John 8:44, NIV).
If you want anything eternal, you must get it from Jesus Christ; He is the “Father of eternity.”
Among the Jews, the word “father” means “originator” or “source.”

He was there at creation, He was there before creation, He has been there all along your life’s journey, and He is already there at the end…
Like I said last week, He has always been within reach, we only need to reach.
He is the father of Eternity
We can also look to this reference and see the Leadership side as well, after all in the very next verse the eternal reigning on the throne is mentioned.
“He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.”
As the forever king on the throne, His kingly Rule includes as I mentioned earlier the great ability to :
Lead
Provide
Protect
Establish
Much like what a father does, or ought to do.
It speaks to the intended or proper fatherly heart.
and if we are to look at this reference of Everlasting Father in terms of the fatherly role, then yes the Heart of the Messiah definitely displays and reveals a Fatherly Heart.
One that:
Leads his people with the love of a father
Provides for his people with the love of a father
Protects his people with the love of a father
Establish’s his kingdom with his people with the love of a father
See it’s the love of a Father, a Fatherly Heart that Jesus our Messiah, our Shepherd has for and leads His people with.
The imagery of Him as father is also seen here in
Oh the heart of a father that is everlasting.
And He will be called Everlasting Father
Now if you still feel the need to see this name in a Trinitarian stance, then sure lets go there as we get ready to bring all of this into a beautiful joyous conclusion.
John 10:
Jesus’ life points to the Father
Jesus Reveals the Heart of the Father as He Reflects the Fathers Heart in his heart.
Jesus came to reveal to the world the Heart of the Father.
Jesus reveals to us the foreverness of the Fatherly Heart
Jesus reveals to us the foreverness of the Fatherly Heart
See this passage in Isaiah it bought hope, faith, joy to a people then in great need.
But this passage in Isaiah it brings hope, faith and joy to us today.
See when Jesus reveals to us the foreverness of the Fatherly Heart, He does it through forgiveness.
See a fathers Heart forgives.
