INTRO: ADVENT
Good Morning! Happy Advent
Good Morning! Happy Advent
How many of ya’ll are doing advent candles at home?
Advent Resources on our Website.
NAME…BIBLES — — Advent: King of Glory #3
Advent = “the coming” or “the arrival”
Embedded in THIS — Anticipation, Excitement, Longing
Excitement for the ARRIVAL OF CHRISTMAS - that is the ADVENT of Christmas
Maybe the ADVENT OF CHRISTMAS BREAK
THE ADVENT OF THE NEW YEAR
THE ADVENT OF THE NEW YEAR
Embedded with in ADVENT is HOPE, PEACE, JOY (week three)
For SOME it seems like we are always anticipating the ADVENT of something.
A new Job
A new semester
A new relationship
A new child
WHAT IS THE HOPE?
Rest? Fulfillment? Satisfaction?
That we too could finally “sit down at the right hand of the father”?
ADVENT is a PICTURE OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE
We all live in a time of UNMET LONGINGS
Sometimes we FORGET that we we are TRULY LONGING FOR DEEP IN OUR BEING:
IS GOD HIMSELF
OUR HOPE THEN is in GOD ALONE
At ONE HOPE we want all people, the CITY, NATIONS AND GENERATIONS to find THIS ULTIMATE HOPE IN THE PERSON AND WORK OF JESUS.
So in the Advent Season we are reminded that our TRUE HOPE, OUR DEEPEST LONGINGS are not met in this Christmas Season, but in Christ Alone.
To see that we’ve been camping out in
We’ve been looking at different FACETS OF JESUS in this series
our RELATIONSHIP with HIM is ultimately initiated and sustained by him.
And today we look at Jesus as Creator and Completer.
not only of the entire universe but
our RELATIONSHIP with HIM is ultimately initiated and sustained by him.
But HOW IT IS DONE SO may be SURPRISING.
LOOK AT HOW JESUS IS BOTH THE CREATOR AND SUSTAINER TODAY
OR AUTHOR AND COMPLETER
We’ll start in today.

JESUS AS CREATOR & SUSTAINER
JESUS AS CREATOR & SUSTAINER
SLIDE
1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

We’ve been looking at DIFFERENT FACETS of who JESUS IS
King of GLORY - King Reigning and Ruling - Powerful King, but Benevolent King
The Divine Son - This King is GOD HIMSELF, the Son, the 2nd Person of the Trinity
WE’VE SEEN JESUS IS BETTER
Today: JESUS AS CREATOR AND SUSTAINER
What is BETTER THAN IT BEING UP TO US?
JESUS DID IT, AND IS DOING IT
Two PHRASES in this OPENING SECTION
SLIDE 3
“through whom also he created the world (Ages)”
“ and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.”
JESUS AS CREATOR
JESUS AS CREATOR
“through whom also he created the world (Ages)”
“world” not COSMOS but AGES
Jesus created the EARTH but more than that.
He CREATED ALL THINGS - the UNIVERSE, the AGES
EVERYTHING VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE
BASICALLY: EVERYTHING FINDS IT’S SOURCE IN JESUS
Other REF’s:
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
Col 1:
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
“ and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.”
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

but he UPHOLDS IT, or sustains it.

JESUS AS AUTHOR AND PERFECTOR
JESUS AS AUTHOR AND PERFECTOR
JESUS ORIGINATOR OF FAITH
JESUS ORIGINATOR OF FAITH
But he CREATED SOMETHING MUCH MORE SIGNIFICANT:
YOUR FAITH, YOUR RECONCILED RELATIONSHIP WITH THE FATHER

10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.

15 and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses.
heb 12:
31 God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.
he— JESUS— is the founder, the originator, the author of our FAITH.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
You didn’t SAVE YOURSELF
Nor COULD YOU!
We all have this DRIVE TO STRIVE
We are NOT QUITE COMFORTABLE with our SALVATION BEING OUT OF OUR HANDS.
WHY? — we all WORSHIP CONTROL
WE WANT CONTROL — CONTROL FREAKS
GRACE says there was nothing we did.
WE DID NOT, WE COULD NOT ACHIEVE THIS
WE COULD ONLY RECEIVE THIS
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
DO WE DO ANYTHING?
NO — source is in JESUS
YES - FAITH IS A GIFT
so is BREAD - but you have to EAT IT
so is WATER - but you have to DRINK IT
WHAT GOOD ARE PRESENTS UNDER THE TREE IF YOU NEVER OPEN THEM?
Dunkin donuts with girls --- empty boxes
Sometimes this is how we TREAT OUR FAITH IN CHRIST
IT LOOKS NICE UNDER THE TREE
GREAT PRESENTATION — but not APPROPRIATION
THAT IS WE DONT’ DO ANYTHING WITH IT
BUT I HAVE GOOD NEWS:
JESUS IS NOT JUST THE AUTHOR/CREATOR/FOUNDATION OF YOUR FAITH HE IS THE PERFECTOR/COMPLETER OF YOUR FAITH
Jesus NOT ONLY CREATES YOUR FAITH, HE’S GOING TO BRING IT TO COMPLETION.
MIDDLE: JESUS AS SUSTAINER
MIDDLE: JESUS AS SUSTAINER
JESUS AS COMPLETOR

11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
END: JESUS AS PERFECTOR
END: JESUS AS PERFECTOR
He is BEGINNING, he is MIDDLE, but he is also PERFECTOR, COMPLETER, FINISHER, FULFILLER

This word means: completer, to bring to fullness.
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
This word shows up all over the book of Hebrews — Major Theme.
Christ will COMPLETE HIS WORK IN YOU.
NOW WE ALL HAVE THIS DRIVE TO STRIVE TOWARDS OUR OWN COMPLETION:
FULFILLMENT
THE PROMISE OF PERFECTION
ESPECIALLY AROUND THE HOLIDAYS
IT’S GOING TO BE A PERFECT FAMILY GATHERING
11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,
HEBREWS
WE DREAM, WE IMAGE, WE HOPE
BUT IT’S NOT REAL
AT BEST IT’S A TASTE OF HEAVEN
AT WORST WE ARE DEVASTATED B/C YET AGAIN FAMILY DRAMA

JESUS, OUR SANCTIFICATION
JESUS, OUR SANCTIFICATION
Jesus is Beginning, Jesus is End, but Jesus is also middle.
Process called SANCTIFICATION
GROWING IN OUR FAITH AND CHRISTLIKENESS
And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption,

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
Jesus is the author of that FAITH
He emodied it perfected it, lived it in you place.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
He empowers you to love and live like him, through the Spirit.

JESUS IMMANUEL IS WITH YOU
He came as the MAN JESUS
He came as the MAN JESUS
He is here NOW as the SPIRIT of JESUS
Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?
You DON’T, CAN’T CARRY THIS on your own
But OUR HOPE IS in the ADVENT OF COMPLETION, OF FULFILLMENT.
HOW DOES JESUS SANCTIFY US, PERFECT US?
HOW DOES JESUS SANCTIFY US, PERFECT US?
ANSWER: SUFFERING
JESUS, OUR SANCTIFICATION
This is CALLED SANCTIFICATION
GROWING IN OUR FAITH AND CHRISTLIKENESS

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

PERFECTED THROUGH SUFFERING
PERFECTED THROUGH SUFFERING
ANSWER: SUFFERING
For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,

HEB 2:10
“PERFECT THROUGH SUFFERING”
This means JESUS had to be born as a man
to experience temptation in every way we do, yet with out sin
that he might be made perfect
9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
FOR YOUR, IN YORU PLACE FOR YOUR SINS
1 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.
heb 10:4
4
14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
What was this SINGLE OFFERING?
His LIFE for OURS
HIM BLOODIED, BEATEN and ABANDONDED so that we WOULD NEVER BY
COULD NEVER BE
he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
“he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.”
for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
“
he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
TELL THEM GOD LOVES THEM — THIS IS THE GOSPEL
HEB 9:
11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.

APPLICATION
APPLICATION
1. SHOULD WE EXPECT ANYTHING LESS THAN JESUS?
So FRIENDS if JESUS was perfected — completed through suffering
SHOULD WE EXPECT ANYTHING LESS?
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
2. WHAT IS OUR HOPE OF ADVENT IN?
JESUS
Christmas, New Year, New chance?
3. WE DO NOT LIVE FOR THIS WORLD, BUT THE NEXT
HOW CAN WE DO THIS?
Christ
He is NEAR
3. WE DO NOT LIVE FOR THIS WORLD, BUT THE NEXT
WE DO NOT LIVE FOR THIS WORLD?
if this is TRUE we can ENDURE SUFFERING NOW
This means — putting others first
self denial, loving one another.
We don’t live for CHRISTMAS we live for CHRIST
The ADVENT we long for IS NOT CHRISTMAS MORNING
IS NOT THE PROMISE OF PERFECT JOYFUL GATHERINGS
IS NOT THE NEW THINGS WE MIGHT ACQUIRE
IT’S NOT IN PEPPERMINT MOCHA’S OR CHRISTMAS BLEND COFFEE
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
The ADVENT is CHRIST HIMSELF
The DAY WILL COME
when we will BE HOME
when we can SIT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER, W/ CHRIST
SO THIS CHRISTMAS, THIS ADVENT?
SO THIS CHRISTMAS, THIS ADVENT?
Are you going to rely on yourself? Or on Jesus
How can you LIVE FOR ANOTHER?
GIVE FOR ANOTHER?
B/C our POWER, OUR PERFECTION, OUR COMPLETENESS IS FOUND IN CHRIST ALONE
ONCE FOR ALL.
LET’S PRAY
