When 2 Miracles meet!

Luke 1:41–44 NRSV
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy.
Luke 1:39–44 NRSV
In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

Intro:
There’s nothing more wonderful than seeing two good friends get together and share about old times!
Isn’t that special!
(slight pause)
It seems like in those types of gatherings......
........the room just fills up with joy!
(pause)
And if you could bottle it up and recreate it.................
...................I think we would!
(pause)
Because everybody wants to be happy!
(pause)
And if we could just hang out with the people that brought us joy.......
.........our lives would just be marvelous would’nt they!
(pause)
But the reality is that.......
.........we don’t get to pick out the people that bring us joy and only hang around those individuals.
(pause)
If the truth be told there are some people.......
.........that instead of bringing us joy, bring us headaches!
(pause)
And I don’t know if this has been your story.....
.......but one of the things that I have discovered is that God has placed some people in my life that I never would have picked.....
............and the amount of Joy that was produced is absolutely Unspeakably Remarkable!
(pause)
And.....
Joy - A feeling of great pleasure and happiness
.......in today’s text we see 2 cousins, Elizabeth and Mary coming together to meet.
.......and both of them have unique stories of how God has touched them
............and even though they are kindred in terms of family
............God is the one who is putting them together to produce something remarkable!
(pause)
Look at it now.....
(pause)
......because it is Elizabeth I want to look at first
Luke 1:7 NRSV
But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were getting on in years.
According to the text.....
Elizabeth and her husband Zechariah are much older now, and her womb was barren meaning that she could not have children...
And so.....
....we are watching the biblical motif or theme of barreness in relation to Elizabeth.
......it is the same barreness that Abrham and Sarah experience that causes Sarah to laugh at God’s ability or power to make her become pregnant.
.......it is the same barreness that Hannah experiences that causes her to pray to God for a son, and Eli the prophet watching her lips move but no words coming out of her mouth.....
.........assumes that she must be a drunk woman!
(pause)
It is this Elizabeth.....
.....who is married to a Zechariah that is made to be mute and unable to speak based on his doubting the angel that tells him his wife will be pregnant with child.
(pause)
It is this very Elizabeth in my spiritual imagination.......
........that God decides is the cousin in particular that Mary could go and see after being visited by the angel!
(pause)
And the first thing that comes to mind is......
......why would God mention Elizabeth to Mary through the angel?
(pause)
And one of the reasons I believe Elizabeth is mentioned is because sometimes.....
........there’s nothing like walking up on a miracle!
(pause)
Because according to the text in verse 36......this same barren Elizabeth is now 6 months pregnant with her son who will be named John the Baptist.
(pause)
And......
.....Mary needs to see this so that her faith can understand what verse 37 shares.....
“For nothing will be impossible with God!”
(pause)
And somebody in here today........
.......is looking for joy to walk up to you
.............when you really need to be walking up on a miracle!
(pause)
And so......
Elizabeth is the first miracle I see in the text........
And she is now 6 months pregnant when she was supposed to be barren and unable to have children!
(pause)
And so of course now........
Mary is the second miracle that I see in the text.......
For it is a virgin Mary who is greeted by the angel Gabriel down in Nazareth.
And the angel tells her....
Luke 1:31–34 NRSV
And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”
Luke 1.31-
And so.......
Mary is a woman who has never been intimate sexually with a man
......and the angel of the Lord tells her that the Holy Spirit is going to come upon her, and overshadow her
In other words.....
.......God is going to place God’s son into your womb miraculously Mary!
Mary is going to not only give birth to........
.........but raise God’s son!
(pause)
Watch this.......
.....because on one hand we have an older Elizabeth (miracle #1) who nobody ever thought would be able to physically have a baby!
.......and on the other hand we have a Mary (miracle #2) that’s physically not supposed to be pregnant yet!
(pause)
And God says in Gods divine wisdom....
“I’m going to bring 2 miracles together for a meeting to PRODUCE some unspeakable PLEASURE
God says.....
“I’m going to FILL the room with JOY.......................with two people that nobody would have ever PICKED
(pause)
Watch this.....
Luke 1:41 NRSV
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit
The bible says......
When these 2 miracles meet.......
and Mary welcomed Elizabeth with greetings
........Elizabeth heard Mary’s voice, and then she felt a strong vigorous stirring of the baby in her womb!
(pause)
Now the bible says that.....
........the baby leaped in the womb!
And I heard one scholar say one time that,
.......when this baby is leaping
.....he is refusing to allow his confinement hinder his celebration!
A good friend of mine Dr. Lewis shared with me that......
....when Dr. Nelson Mandella was confined in prison he would recite his favorite poem “Invictus” in order to perservere.
“Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menance of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.”
(pause)
And some of us have not yet learned how to celebrate God unless we are experiencing the best of conditions....
.....unless we got a little room in our lives metaphorically speaking
But this baby........
........is showing us that nothing should stop the celebration
.......when the King of Kings comes into the room!
(pause)
And some of us just as Mr. Mandella did....
....... need to LEAP even in a prison!
.......regardless of your season
......when Jesus enters the room
(pause)
You need to start your own PARTY!
Look at somebody and shout........
LEAP!!
(pause)
Then at the end of this verse it says....
“And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit”
Meaning.....
The Holy Spirit was the source of her inspiration......
.......and he helped her to understand the significance of her baby’s movement!
(pause and expound)
Look at it now.......
Luke 1:42 NRSV
and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
According to the text.......
Once Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit.......after her baby leaps in her womb
.......she now understands that she is not the only miracle in the room!
(pause)
[First person.....and conversational tone]
“Wait a minute.......”
“I’m not the only one that God is working through!”
(pause and expound)
See now........
......we getting ready to SET IT OFF up in here for real!
Because now.......
........God is revealing what’s going on around us!
(pause)
And the bible says Elizabeth shouts back at Mary!
“God has blessed you!”
(pause)
in other words.........
in other words.........
“I know who you’re carrying!”
(pause)
And I wish I had somebody in here that knows what this has to mean for Mary!
(pause)
Because when nobody understands whats really going on in your life.......
.......and God’s got you in that different........weird place that you can’t really talk to nobody about
......when you’re standing in your own miracle and you know if you tell anybody about it they might just call you crazy...
(pause)
Its such a good relief........
.......to have somebody who has their own miracle story
.......and can look at you and declare.......
“I know what you’re carrying!”
(pause and expound)
The bible says in verse 43.....
Elizabeth starts trying to figure out why Mary showed up at her house of all the places she could have showed up?
But if I could step into the pages of Lukes Gospel I would explain to Elizabeth that......
God is using 2 miracles to show the world how real JOY is produced!!!
(pause)
Watch it.......
Luke 1:44 NRSV
For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy.
Mary you did’nt tell me you was pregnant.......
......and you definetely did not tell me who you was carrying
But........
.........I’m carrying something too!
(pause)
And my baby........
............moved when he heard your voice!
And this was not an ORDINARY MOVE
But..........................
.......beacause my baby is connected to your baby
........by purpose
.......when you showed up
.........my baby recognized why he was here!
(pause)
.........and the purpose of
And this is what we need more of in the body of CHRIST.....
.........we need miracles to start walking up on each other!
..........we need believers in Christ who are carrying something!
(pause)
So that........
..........we can produce some UNSPEAKABLE JOY!
And when people ask us.....
......why are you so happy?!?
(pause)
We can holla back........
.........2 miracles just HOOKED UP!
But get ready.......
.........because JOHN and jumping for no reason............
..........but JESUS is getting ready to show up!!!!!!!
Get ready............
.........because something BIG is getting ready to happen!!!
..............................(EXPOUND and CLOSE)........................................................
