Words matter!
In a very controversial section of scripture it should not be, but it is.
Words matter, words have meaning and have application.
Today we are looking at Mark’s version of the great commission, simple words with simple application.
He wanted the gospel proclaimed to everyone (Mk16:15)
Those who believe and are baptized will be saved (Mk16:16)
Those who do not believe will be condemned (Mk16:16)
Words matter and simple words matter and still man has taken them and formed 5 common views of salvation from these simple Words.
Maybe look at other version
How about another
Just one more
Mk16:15-1
I would ask, what did you see, what did you notice, what sticks out to you, but I think this is pretty obvious that in the translations and interpretations I just used the simple words have simple application.
What are the instructions given?
(look at your bible and answer)
So if there is simple words with simple instructions are plan and simple, how do people get something different?
Let’s look at the views together.
Our first view is groups who do not profess to be Christians, belief in Christ.
He who believes and is baptized shall not be saved
In this group, are actually two groups, Atheist’s and all who do not believe in Jesus.
Atheist do not believe in God, heaven, hell, or salvation of any kind.
Many within this group are what are called humanist.
an outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters.
Humanist beliefs stress the potential value and goodness of human beings, emphasize common human needs, and seek solely rational ways of solving human problems.
That is from Oxford dictionary on humanism
All who do not believe in Jesus - this would include, but not limited to most Jews, Muslims, Hindu’s, etc.
These are people who believe in God or a divine being but not in Jesus Christ as the Son of God the Creator of all things
All who do not believe in Jesus - this would include, but not limited to most yehJews, Muslims, Hindus, etc. c. .
They believe in a salvation, most of them of a heaven, but not that salvation is found in Jesus.
Biblical view that debunks these groups here.
There is a God who offers salvation (1Tim2:3-4)
what is God’s desire here?
Salvation does come through Jesus, and through Him alone (Jn14:6; 1Tim2:5-6)
You could add Act4:12 too, but then we would keep going, but basically it says there is salvation in no other name.
Now if you look at what we read in Timothy and continued there
what do you pick up here?
Simple words with simple instructions are just discarded.
And that leads us to our next view.
He who does not believe and is not baptized will be saved
This is the view of universalists, definition: a person who believes that all humankind will eventually be saved.
This group believes in God and the mercy and grace of God that is for all people.
Scripture taken out of context is used for this group (1Tim2:6)
Look at the verse, and it by itself could be taken that way
If all were to be saved why is there a mediator needed?
Why would there need to be a ransom paid?
Biblical view that debunks this view
1Tim2:5-6 is in context and would remove that view
If everyone is going to be saved, eventually, why is a mediator needed, why is a ransom given?
Paul’s warning Eph5:5-6 should be considered also.
what do you see that debunks the everyone will be saved eventually, the universalist view?
simple words with simple application, and as simple Christians I do not think you would carry either of these beliefs, this now leads us to our next view.
He who does not believe and is baptized will be saved.
Logically this view makes no sense at all, but there are many through their practices have this view.
View held by those who practice infant baptism
Baptism by sprinkling, pouring not immersion of those who are incapable of belief, of faith.
There are those that think that faith is not necessary that God gives faith, saving faith to the infant at baptism and is still saved and later confirmed
This is the view of those who believe in “original sin.”
that you are born into sin and are a sinner at birth and without baptism you are condemned because of Adam’s sin (original sin)
Biblical view that debunks this
Faith, belief is a prerequisite for baptism and salvation (Act8:35-37; Rom10:9-10)
act8:37
What requirement(s) do you see here in this passage?
What requirements do you see here?
(Baptizo definition picture)
The Greek word for baptism is Baptizo mean to dip, plunge, immerse.
Interesting fact to become a proselyte Jew you were baptized by immersion.
And you would baptize a piece of clothing to dye it.
Baptism described as burial (Rom6;3-4; Col2:12)
And add to that
Did you know that there was no argument in the early church about baptism?
Sprinkling, pouring was not introduced for several hundred years after Pentecost and the command to be baptized.
How about another piece of trivia, to become a Jew you had to be baptized by immersion to symbolize your death and rebirth, sound familiar?
(Traditions of man or God picture)
By keeping the traditions of men by sprinkling or pouring, we fail to keep the command of God.
Jesus condemnation of displacing God’s commands with traditions of men (Mt5:3-9; Mk7-8) it was serious then, it is serious today.
Baptism of infants is without scriptural precedent or authority since there must be faith (Mk16:16; Act8:37) and repentance (Act2:38; Act17:30)
Infants are incapable of understanding, so they would not be candidates
Now, I do need to stop here for a moment for I would think that the people in this category are honest, sincere lovers of God and followers of Jesus, but are guilty of trading man made traditions vs. keeping to the simple words with simple application given by Jesus.
People in this group are not grouped with the Atheists and unbelievers, they believe in Jesus and worship him, but still are guilty of non-biblical view of salvation and baptism.
This leads us to our next common view.
He who believes and is not baptized will be saved
This is a very common view, and people in this group, for the most part are God loving, sincere people who love God but have by teaching or by misunderstanding been mislead from the simple words and simple application.
This is the faith only believers (Jn3:16)
(Faith only picture)
This is the most common view within Christiandome, or evangelical denominations.
Biblical view that debunks this
I think we need to take a few minutes and look at passages, so that we are fully prepared to, with love, respect, able to share with others what the Bible says, not for an argument but for knowledge of simple words with simple direction that were not argued on Pentecost.
Faith alone cannot save, Jesus words (Mt7:21; Lk6:46)
What is the command by Jesus here?
What is the promise?
This saying by Jesus is a precursor isn’t it?
One who does the will of the fath
What is the admonishment here?
Faith alone cannot save, Apostles words (Rom6:17-18; Jm2:14, 17, 20, 24, 26 and 1Pt1:22)
What are we to do, how are we to do it?
- obedient from the heart, to the teaching that you become committed to.
What do you learn about faith only in these verses?
Baptism essential according to Jesus (Jn3:5; Mk16:16; Mt28:18-20)
Baptism essential according to apostles (ACt2:38; Act22:16; Col2:12-13; Tit3:5 and 1Pt3:21)
We know Act2:38, repent and be baptized for forgiveness of sins.
