Introduction

Have you ever heard the expression: You can’t see the forest from the trees? This is said of one who focuses on the details so much they can’t see the big picture. Today’s lesson is a journey of mine in how to interpret the bible and an introduction to biblical theology.

What is biblical theology?

For Vos, biblical theology was a kind of exegesis that studied “the process of the self-revelation of God deposited in the Bible.” Biblical theology is “the study of the actual self-disclosures of God in time and space which lie back of even the first committal to writing of any Biblical document,”

Biblical Theology Journey

God’s Glory in Salvation through Judgment: A Biblical Theology 2.1. Finding Our Way in the Widening Gyre: The History and Purpose of Biblical Theology

That is, Moses presented a biblical-theological interpretation of the traditions he received regarding Cain and Abel, Isaac and Ishmael, Jacob and Esau, Joseph and his brothers, and his own experience with his kinsmen. Joshua then presented a biblical-theological interpretation of Israel’s history (Joshua 24), and the same can be said of the rest of the authors of the Prophets and the Writings, the Gospels and Acts, the Epistles and the Apocalypse.

Biblical theology is not an expanding story but more of an unraveling mystery. In other words, you’re getting more of the same rather than more information. It’s like an onion…it has layers.

What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices?

says the LORD;

I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams

and the fat of well-fed beasts;

I do not delight in the blood of bulls,

or of lambs, or of goats.

For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
