The Perfecter
God set up a theocracy through Moses- God ruled.
Prophets and priests.
God was king.
men would take some of the functions of king but they were limited (Judges).
Prophet= one who speaks for God.
Priest= one who speak for Man.
King= one who is supreme authority over a territory.
Ruler and Judge
Prophets were limited in what they knew.
Priests were limited by an imperfect sacrifice.
Kings were limited by their humanity.
Messes with justice.
The problem for Israel was always having imperfect kings with supreme authority.
It’s the reason they longed for the Messiah- the perfect king.
Pray
Set Up
We realize in the Old Testament that something is missing.
We see a picture of the perfect possibility that never lives up to its ability.
Example: Moses
Prophet- that needs an interpreter- also gets angry
Priest- People still end up in judgemtn
King- works self to death making every decision for the people.
Ends up not getting to go into the promised land.
Until...
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Jesus perfects the three offices of the Old Testament
Prophet
Jesus was God- he spoke with greater authority
for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
- Jesus is the Word
Prophets were lonely--
The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord.
8 And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, “You shall die!
They heard from God and would have to share what was told.
Jonah
People wanted dead because of their message.
Elijah and Elisha
Jesus spoke perfectly for God- because he was God.
Priest
After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high
He made the Purification of sins as High Priest
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
Intercession
Who is to condemn?
Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
-2 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.
But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
Perfect Priest
For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.
27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.
28 For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.
Yet Also the Perfect Sacrifice
The only priest able to also be the sacrifice.
And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.
14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
King
Ruler and Judge
“Heir of all things”
Gabriel told Mary that Jesus would be given the throne of David and would rule over the house of Jacob forever.
“I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.
14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
Jesus’ kingdom is not physical.
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world.
If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews.
But my kingdom is not from the world.”
His mission was to have God reign in the hearts of man.
He is the perfect King.
He doesn’t abuse power.
Perfect Judge.
We must surrender to his authority.
Everyone will receive perfect justice.
- Sin must be paid for.
CONCLUSION
We all need a prophet, priest and king.
Jesus will take that role in your life.
Will you let Jesus take his proper place in your life?
