What is His Name?
What is His Name?
Proverbs 30:4
Who Agur was we don’t know. But he was a wise and humble man. His words commence with a confession of his own ignorance.
He asks a great question about the God Who gathers the wind in His fists, who has bound the waters in His garment, and who has established all the ends of the earth.
What is His name? Agur didn’t know. And what is His Son’s name? That was harder still. It was a new idea that God should have a Son. Certainly they didn’t know His name.
Maybe they remembered that their father Jacob (unbless Agur lived before him?) had wrestled with a Man at Peniel, and He was no ordinary man, for the prophet sadi (referring to that night) ‘in his manhood he had power with God. The divine Wrestler asked Jocob’s name and when he had confessed to it, for it was not a name to be proud of, (It means Supplanter and it emphasised an undesirable streak in his character) He changed his name to Israel, a prince with God.
‘Tell me your name’ said Jacob to the Stranger. ‘Why do you ask after my name’ was the only reply he received. He wasn’t told.
Another man, years later, had an encounter with One who was described as the Angel of the Lord. He came in human form to his wife first, and she described Him as a Man of God. He came again in response to Manoah’s request, and he asked him his name. ‘Why are you asking after my name, seeing it is Wonderful...’
I have no doubt that the One who appeared to Jacob and then to Manoah was no other than God’s Son, our Lord Jesus Who appeared on occasions in human form before He was born of the virgin. (Christophanies)
But, it was given to a favoured young women, the virgin Isaiah spoke about, who was chosen by God that through her womb His Son should take upon Himself our human nature, to have disclosed to her his wonderful Name.
It was a secret kept through the ages. Tell me his name, and his son’s name, if you know and nobody knew until the angel said to Mary, ‘you will conceive … and bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus.’ Luke 1:31. And to Joseph, in Matthew 1:21 ‘she will bear a Son and you shall call His name Jesus.’
The prophet Micah spoke of Him and told He would be born in Bethlehem, and he said of Him Micah 5:2 . He is the One who held the wind in His fists…, for all things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that has been made. And yet, an infant baby He lay, in Bethlehem’s manger on that day . What is His Name, and what is His Son’s Name, if you know? Yes, we do know, and a wonderful Name it is, His Name is Jesus, the Son of the Most High God.
