John 17:1 NIV84
After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.
This is the third prayer that is recorded by John.
First was where Jesus prays for Lazarus.
Second was where the Greeks have asked to see Jesus and Jesus responds with a prayer.
A couple of questions to consider. Why does Jesus pray at this point, and what does John give us such a detailed look at this prayer?
Jesus will be crucified the next day. John gives us the last few hours of Jesus’ life and teaches us many things through this prayer.
An example for us in in the prayer as well. Jesus had just proclaimed truth in that there would be trouble and that they disciples would receive the Holy Spirit. So Jesus has proclaimed His truth and then follows up with this prayer. This shows us that we should also mix proclaiming the truth with prayer, asking God to bless the truth that has been proclaimed. Bible study and prayer should always go together.
One commentator, Bruce Milne, wrote: “It is prayer, costly, sustained and prevailing that the Word of God is released through teaching and preaching.”
As a pastor, I am reminded that we preach to we must also pray for. The word that is preached must also be prayed over.
The prayer of is a parting prayer. It has become known as a prayer before Jesus was to offer His ultimate sacrifice. Many scholars believe that it was a prayer that lifted the soul of Jesus.
Psalm 25:1 NIV84
To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul;
Hebrews 5:7 NIV84
During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.
John 17:1 NIV84
After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.
AFTER JESUS SAID THIS is referring to His statements that were in .
HE LOOKED TOWARD HEAVEN indicates a posture of His prayer. This phrase was used by Jesus in when Jesus was dealing with Lazarus.
John 11:41 NIV84
So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
Jesus prays for Himself first then later we see that He will pray for His disciples then all future believers.
Jesus says that the time has come.
Ecclesiastes
Ecclesiastes 9:12 NIV84
Moreover, no man knows when his hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so men are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them.
Psalm 35:15 NIV84
But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing.
Jesus knew of the ancient scriptures that spoke of this idea:
Psalm 31:15
Psalm 31:15 NIV84
My times are in your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me.
No man knows his time, but the Son of Man knew because He was God.
John 12:27 NIV84
“Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
The main desire of Jesus was to Glorify the Father.
1 Peter 4:11 NIV84
If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Our chief desire should be to glorify the Father as well.
Romans 11:36 NIV84
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.
Romans 16:
Romans 16:27 NIV84
to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.
1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV84
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
Ephesians 1:6 NIV84
to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.
Ephesians 1:1
Ephesians 1:12 NIV84
in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 1:14 NIV84
who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
Do you think that the prayer, “Glorify Your Son” is a selfish prayer?
John 17:2 NIV84
For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.
In context, this verse is speaking about Jesus, the Son. Notice the word authority.
Matthew 28:18 NIV84
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
John shares with us also that Jesus had been given authority to
1. Judge:
John 5:27 NIV84
And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
John
2. Take up His Life
John 10:18 NIV84
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”
3. To Give eternal life
John 17:2 NIV84
For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.
Notice where the power of Jesus comes from: Given by God.
Notice the extent of His power: Over all people.
John 3:25 NIV84
An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.
John 3:35 NIV84
The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.
Psalm 22:28 NIV84
for dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.
Psalm 72:8 NIV84
He will rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.
Notice the purpose of His power: Eternal Life.
John 17:3 NIV84
Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
We are given a definition of eternal life: “that they may know You.”
I am reminded of that beautiful passage that Paul wrote in :
Philippians 3:8–10 NIV84
What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,
The thing that makes Christianity different from all all religions in the world is ETERNAL LIFE.
Eternal life gives us communion with God.
Psalm 17:15 NIV84
And I—in righteousness I will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness.
Psalm 17:
Christianity shows us eternal life in heaven by first pointing us to God then giving us Jesus as the Mediator between God and Man.
1 John 5:20 NIV84
We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
John 3:17 NIV84
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
Augustine wrote: “You have made us for Yourself and our hearts are restless until they find rest in You.”
We can know God because of Jesus. Jeremiah said it this way:
Jeremiah 31:34 NIV84
No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
John 17:4 NIV84
I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.
What a statement this is! Jesus shows He was sent to do work for God.
John
John 4:34 NIV84
“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
John
John 5:36 NIV84
“I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me.
John 9:
John 9:34 NIV84
To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.
John
John 9:3–4 NIV84
“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
We have Jesus implying that He has completed His Father’s mission.
We have Jesus also implying that the work of the disciples being trained by Jesus and being sent out into the world is His completing work.
It shows the supreme motivation for Christian service in glorifying God is in completing the assigned tasks.
Sir Walter Raleigh wrote: “O Lord God, when You give Your servants to endeavour any great matter, grant us also to know that it is not the beginning, but the continuing of the same to the end, until it be thoroughly finished, which yields the true glory, through Him Who for the finishing of your work, laid down His life, our Redeemer, Jesus Christ.”
John 17:5 NIV84
And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
John
Becoming flesh meant Jesus had to leave the Glory He had known.
Philippians
Philippians 2:5–8 NIV84
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!
Jesus sets His mind and all He is towards what lies ahead.
Hebrews 12:2 NIV84
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
This verse testifies that Jesus is co-eternal with His Father.
Jesus was still God, yet had manifested Himself in flesh, not in His glory. He left His Father’s glory for a time. Now He is asking the Father to return Him to the Glory.
