The Angel and Jospeh
Welcome
Intro
It seems like it has been a while since we last preached
But this week we will continue with our study of the Angel and Jospeh
But before we do that I wanted to give you a recap of the Angel and Mary that started this a few weeks ago
We started by looking at the Angel and Mary and how the Angel addressed her and then we saw Mary’s response to being the chosen virgin to give birth to the Savior of the Universe
See Mary was the first person to question the Virgin Birth
But notice how Mary left things
Luke 1:38 NASB95
38 And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Mary took a leap of faith and was obedient to God
And we celebrate what happened because of her obedience
Church because of Mary's leap of faith
you and I were challenge to take a leap of faith and be obedient to the Lord
When God calls us to do something you and I are to be obedient to that call
When God comes to us and gives us direction then church you and I are to take a leap of faith and be obedient
This morning we will look at another leap of faith
This morning we will look at the story of when the Angel met with Joseph
Matthew 1:18–19 NASB95
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.
This story starts off pretty normal and almost how you and I would expect
This story starts off like when the Angel met with Mary
Things just happen to be going along
Preparations are being made for the wedding and food is being ordered and plans are being made for this amazing celebration
I wonder if it was being talked around by their neighbors that in a few days Jospeh would be marrying Mary
But Jospeh was moving through hose plans and getting things done so the celebration would be great and grand
Then Jospeh finds out that she is pregnant
Jospeh was most likely the second person to question the virgin birth
Jospeh know the ramifications of sending her away publicly
She would have no where to go and no one to take care of her
Joseph was a good man and wanted to do the right thing
So Joseph put the wedding plans on hold and began to plans to send her away secretly
Those plans may have included a place to stay away from this area, and money for living but agian this all had to be done away from their local area
Church Joseph was a good man and wanted to do the right thing for himself and for Mary
But something happens
Joseph has an encounter that will change his life forever
Matthew 1:20 NASB95
20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
When Joseph began to make those plans and begin to figure things our because all of the sudden Mary was pregnant
You can see the shift in the story here
Things are going as everyone has planned and then this verse starts off with BUT
Jospeh’s life is all planned out and things are going good he is about to be married
BUT
But Joseph has an encounter with an Angel from the Living God
The angel starts off with Do Not Be Afraid
We see this throughout scripture when the Angel comes most often they say Do not Be Afraid
Then the Angel shares with Joseph what is going on
The details of what is happening
Joseph encountered an angel from the Living God and it changed his entire life
I wonder church if we were to encounter an angel from the Living God if it would change our lives or if we would dismiss it
This is just the initial conversation with the Angel
The Angel goes on to give more information
Matthew 1:21–23 NASB95
21 “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
The Angel explains that Mary will have a son and you are to name him Jesus
Church before we move on that is important for a number of reasons
It was common for the man to name the child a family name
Jesus was not a family name for Joseph
The Angel tells him to name the boy Jesus because in this particular language it meant salvation
Jesus was going to save His people!
In the case of Jesus (the Greek form of Joshua or Jeshua, a common name: see on 27:16) both the sound (cf. Heb. yôšî’a, ‘he will save’) and the probable etymology (‘Yahweh is salvation’, or ‘O save, Yahweh’) contribute to the explanation for he will save his people from their sins.
Do you begin to understand that Jesus came to save His people
We also know this is not some random young women, not some random young man, this is not some random child that will be born to save His people
This has been the plan since before creation, becaue God knew back before the garden that Adam would sin and knew that He God needed a plan to save His creation
Back in Isaiah we see that a virgin would give birth to a son and they would name Him Immanuel
Which translate God with us
that is exactly what is going to happen
Jesus is going to leave His heavenly throne and come and physically dwell with his creation
God with us
That is exactly salvation
When you ask Jesus into you heart to dwell with you
God is with you
God comes and lives in your heart
That is what we are seeing happen
All because an Angel of the Lord has an encounter with Joseph does it change Joseph’s life forever
He would go onto become the earthly father of the savior of the universe
Matthew 1:24–25 NASB95
24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.
Joseph wakes up from his dream
notice it doesn't say that he talked with people, that he sought council, that he talked things over with Mary but that he immediately does what the Angel says
He does everything the Angel says to Him
He marries Mary and she has Jesus and because it was custom for the man to name the child, Joseph names Him Jesus
Just as the Angel had told him too
Church I wonder if you and I were to encounter an Angel of the Lord would we be obedient?
It does require a leap of faith
I don’t want to water what Mary and Joseph did
But church you have it in front of you in black and white
You can read it for yourself they were obedient to the Word of the Lord and it changed their lives forever
They were part of Salvation for the entire World
Because we see from the name of Jesus that Jesus purpose was to come and save those
Luke 19:10 NASB95
10 “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
Jesus himself tells us his purpose
Jesus came to seek and save those who were lost, because those who were found did not need finding
Praise the Lord Jesus came for the sick, the dirty, the messy people like me
CLOSING
Maybe that is you
Maybe you are lost and you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus
We want to invite you to the front and there will be people up front who can show you in scripture of how to begin a personal relationship with Jesus
Or maybe you have a relationship with Jesus and simply need to spend sometime in pray at the altar
