For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Some of you may wonder about the hope and joy we have in Jesus and that we sang about tonight. I am going to be brief but I do not want to miss the opportunity to share plainly with you the good news that we have, from scripture. I pray the Holy Spirit will help you to hear this message with open ears.
First, We were created by a Holy God but through our disobedience sin entered the world. And this destroyed our relationship with a holy and perfect God.

Romans 1
This rebellion is something we are all guilty of.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
This sin (living contrary to God) comes with consequences
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Because of this sin we are left dead. Hopeless. Unless God intervenes, and the joy is that he did.
God did not abandon us. Speaking of Jesus...

who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Jesus came as a baby in a manger to be obedient in a way we could never be even to the cross.
Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
Jesus took our punishment.
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
We can now be in a relationship with our Holy God once again.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
This is a gift from God
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
God created. we destroyed. and then He made it right again.
This is the joy we celebrate at Christmas. The coming of God in flesh to make us right with Him again.
This is the God we know and love and who makes himself known.
