Luke 2:8-
Luke 2:8–14 ESV
8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
Luke 2:15–20 ESV
15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
Luke 2:8–20 KJV 1900
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, Good will toward men. 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Beth-lehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
Luke 2:14-

I. The angel apperence (8-9)

Luke 2:8–9 KJV 1900
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
Luke 2:
There were in the same countery
This in fact is not refering to the countery of Isriel but rather the word here implies the area around bethlehm.
It is worth noting no modern translation uses countery the most comen translation is region.
In all licklyhood when KJV translators wrote they were thinking of what we currently think of as a counteryside. This would have been understood to be just outside a walled city. today we don’t have walled cities so region is the best use.
Shepards
Shapards were watching there sheep the sheep would have been in the fold and the shepards would have been in fromt of the door to the fold.
The angel appearence
So they were in the middle of the night while it was quiet and peaceful watching the shhep and protecting them from wolves when suddenly
an agel apeard
the glory of the Lord shown around them
Think about your responce? what would you be thinking
The glory of the Lord
Think about this for a moment we don’t know exactly how God accomplished this but..
Moses asked to see the glory of God and god told him he could not see it because it would kill them but here the Glory of God was around them
God chose shepards
God chose shepards
Also God chose the first people to find out about the bith of Christ to be the lowest of socioty The shepards were down with fisherman they were a low rung of socioty.

II. The angel instruction (10-14)

Luke 2:10–14 KJV 1900
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, Good will toward men.
So at this point the shepards are ready to fight or posibly ready to get out of there, either way they were in a state of complet panic
The angel said...
1. fear not
2. I bring you great joy
3. and this joy is for all people who accept him
Today.. right now a Messiah was born in Bethlem who is Christ the Lord
Just as the angel did when he apeard to marry he also asured the shepards they do not need to be afraid
The sign
Because most asuredly there were many babies being born in Bethlem the angel give them a sign
A babby wrapped tightly in cloth lying in a manger
Suddenly
multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people he favors!
This is a hevenly army not just a whole lot of something
Just imagine this event
an agel apeard
the glory of God was about them
an entire host of angels appeard praising God
they were saying Glory to God to the highest heven and peace to all

II. The Shepards responce (15-18

Luke 2:15–18 ESV
15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.
The shepards go to Bethlehm
This is a most rare occurence, the text does not nesesarily say they did not take their sheep with them, but it would have been extreemly strange to take 100s of sheep and it would have been quite a sight, so in all licklyhood they left their sheep to go to bethlehem,
Shepards leaving there sheep just did not happen.
Also the fact that they went and saw Jesues that verry night further proves that they were in the counteryside right outside of Bethrlehm not a long wase away.
When they saw it
The did not just go they went with haste and they saw exactly what the angels had told them
Imagine this seeing shepards going all over bethlehm telling beople about the born savior.
Rember the shepards were the bottom of socioty so they were not exactly respected, imagine the thoughts of some,, I am sure some people thought they were crazy or even drunk but others surely belived them, all however were amazed.
“All that herd it wondered”
I want to be clear this phrase does not mean that those that herd it were curious as we would use this wording today. but rather that they were struck with suprize and astonishment which would have been the use of the word wondered in 1611 most modern translations use the word “amazed” to convey the proper meaning
IV. Mary’s responce (19-20)
Luke 2:19–20 KJV 1900
19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
Marry pondered
One last translation issue this morning the word pondered here does not mean what we would think of today
when you ponder something you think about it, but rather it means to treasure to hold of high asteme Merry was greatful for all that had happened
Think about this whole neritive and the fact that merry was 13 or 14 years hold here. and most asuredly she tresured everything that had happened
Shepards
They returned
They gloryfied God
They praised God
Application
We obviously are not going to have angels come tell us things but if the birth of Christ was a big deal then it is a big deal today
Without Christs birth we would still live under law and we are not jews so we would be living with no hope
