INTRO: WHAT IS REAL?
Good morning One Hope!
ClIP
INTRO: What is real?
Neo: This...this isn't real?
Morpheus: What is real.
How do you define real?
If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.
This is the world that you know.
The world as it was at the end of the twentieth century.
It exists now only as part of a neural-interactive simulation that we call the Matrix.
You've been living in a dream world, Neo.
This is the world as it exists today....
In my generation, this was a LIFE ALTERING clip.
Could something like the matrix actually exist?
This was not a new idea, but pulling on centuries old philosophies of existence.
But for me, in my early 20’s it was was disorienting.
Yet there are biblical roots here…we can ask What is Real?
We can look out to our and ask what is real?
or perhaps…what is the truest reality?
Or perhaps, what really matters?
This is in PART what the book of Hebrews is about.
We’ve been spending this Advent Series in Hebrews Chapter 1 looking at the different facets — or realities — of who Jesus is.
Today we continue in the vein as we ASK: What is real?
In this Christmas Season:
What is real?
The Christmas Lights, the Christmas trees, the sweaters, the presents, the peppermint mochas?
The promise of harmony?
Are these what is real?
Is this what our HOPE is really in?
Here’s what is REAL
Jesus as King of Glory - Week 1
We’ve Seen Jesus as KING of Glory
Jesus as God - Week 2
Jesus as Creator and Completer - Week 3
Today, the truth all of us need to hear most:
Jesus is the Atoning Sacrifice.
This is the deepest reality for all of us:
We were sinners, separated from God and we needed a Savior.
Today we see that Jesus is more real then anyone or anything in our lives.
PURIFICATION & PROPITIATION
Nation, Leaders, Kids Ministry
PURIFICATION & PROPITIATION
We’ll kick it off in again.
The phrase we will focus on this week is:
“after making purification for sins”
We could ask what does this mean?
This word could be translated as ‘purging’ as well.
(KJV)
This word means to cleanse or purify and is used in the NT to talk about leprosy and unclean spirits, and in referring to Judas (), or unclean food (ritually), or the idea of impurity in the epistles
This word means to cleanse or purify and is used in the NT to talk about leprosy and unclean spirits, and in referring to Judas (), or unclean food (ritually), or the idea of impurity in the epistles
This word could be translated as ‘purging’ as well.
(KJV)
last week we talked about how JESUS was the Founder (or author, originator) of our faith.
We read that Jesus was, the founder of their salvation, was made perfect (or completed) through suffering ()
In order to do this he had to become human, the INCARNATION, so that he could die for our sins in our place.
Listen to how ,
HE MADE PURIFICATION by PROPITIATION.
“Whoa, you lost me…propitiation?
What’s in the world is that?”
This is one of the most SIGNIFICANT WORDS in the Bible Because it encapsulates one of the deepest realities in which we live.
The word is ILASKOMAI, pardon my greek.
Everyone say “ILASKOMAI”
Merry Christmas, you learned koine greek
It is translated in different ways;
propitiation (ESV), make expiation (RSV), to take away (NLT), make reconciliation (KJV), make atonement (NIV)
make expiation (RSV)make atonement (NIV), make reconciliation (KJV), , to take away (NLT)
propitiation, expiation, atonement
The main ideas are:
expiation: the removal of sin
Propitiation: The appeasement of wrath against sin
YES GOD IS ANGRY AT SIN
Atonement: bringing back together, at-one-ment, reconciliation
Atonement: bringing back together, at-one-ment, reconciliation
In other words: it is THE HEART OF THE GOSPEL
In- fact the root word is “IL-AY-OS”
Someone say “IL-AY-OS”
this word means, mercy or grace
Example:
Day of Atonement
High Priest - Holy of Holies
mercy seat - blood would be sprinkled on this seat, which sat above the ark of the covenant between the cheriubm
guess what same root word: IL-LAS-TAYRION
two goats - sin offering (propitiation), scapegoat (expiation)
the result = atonement.
What about in Hebrews?
