Shepherds were not known to be very reputable members of society. I have found myself at different times comparing them to the “carnie folk” that shows up for all the small town festivals.
They typically had little formal education, they often led nomadic type lives where they never really settled down but just keep their flocks moving to greener pastures. They knew their world of sheep, but they knew little of the social nuances of the culture of the day. They were pretty simple minded, and as often is the case they were not really trusted because they were not really understood.
We might not be able to understand their ways, but God does and He knew that they were the perfect people to share the message of the birth of the Messiah.
What made the Shepherds the perfect messengers for God? They were simple folk.
15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.
They Simply Responded. They didn’t take a day or two to consider if this might be a good idea. They didn’t wonder if maybe they should talk to someone who has more experience in angelic encounters. They didn’t order a book on Amazon or wait for their Church to start a new class on the subject. God sent them a message and they were not going to mess with it, and they were not gonna miss it. They went.
17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.
They Simply Declared. These Shepherds showed great faith in leaving their flock and heading to Bethlehem. And when their faith became sight, they told everyone they saw about what God had done in their lives.
20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
The Shepherds were so impacted by the glory of the Lord and his messengers the angels that they were not wondering, they were not pondering they were simply recognizing all that God had done and giving him praise. Glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen
What do you know of the God of these Simple Shepherds?
Do you need to hear their message tonight? Do you understand that their message was good news of great joy that will be for all people? That includes you.
These simple Shepherd didn’t understand every aspect of the significance of this baby who was born, but it didn’t stop them from celebrating what they did know. A Savior has been born in to the world, and while they didn’t know how it changed everything, they knew that it would.
