ON PRAYER
ON PRAYER
That is to say: every prayer of ours should be a praying of the Lord’s Prayer in some shape or form. (Packer)
As analysis of light requires reference to the seven colors of the spectrum that make it up, so analysis of the Lord’s Prayer requires reference to a spectrum of seven distinct activities: approaching God in adoration and trust; acknowledging his work and his worth, in praise and worship; admitting sin, and seeking pardon; asking that needs be met, for ourselves and others; arguing with God for blessing, as wrestling Jacob did in (God loves to be argued with); accepting from God one’s own situation as he has shaped it; and adhering to God in faithfulness through thick and thin. These seven activities together constitute biblical prayer, and the Lord’s Prayer embodies them all. (Packer, 157)
Lloyd Jones:
Prayer is beyond any question the highest activity of the human soul.
ultimate test of a man's true spiritual condition. There is nothing that tells the truth about us as Christian people so much as our prayer life. Everything we do in the Christian life is easier than prayer.
They meant by this that they would like to be able to pray as He prayed. `We wish we knew God as You know Him.
There is a sense in which you can never add to the Lord's Prayer; nothing is left out.
`You know, I prayed and prayed but nothing happened. I did not seem to find peace. I did not seem to get any satisfaction out of it.' Most of their trouble is due to the fact that their approach to prayer has been wrong, that somehow or other they did not realize what they were doing.
Here more clearly than anywhere the purpose of prayer becomes plain: not to make God do my will (which is practicing magic), but to bring my will into line with his (which is what it means to practice true religion). (Packer, 179)
Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”

Finding God’s Will
Finding God’s Will
But how shall we know what God wants of us?
By paying attention to his Word and
to our own consciences,
by noting what circumstances allow, and
by taking advice in order to check our own sense of the situation and the adequacy of our insight into what is right. (Packer, 180)
And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.
But how shall we know what God wants of us? By paying attention to his Word and to our own consciences, by noting what circumstances allow, and by taking advice in order to check our own sense of the situation and the adequacy of our insight into what is right. (Packer, 181)
PRAYING TO THE FATHER
PRAYING TO THE FATHER
Q: Where does a child go when they have a problem?
Ans: very young children go to their parents.
We all grew up and became foolish. We thought we didn’t need a father anymore. We thought we didn’t need help.
We thought we were honoring God, our father, by never asking him.
But this is not scrpitural!
I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
Who has believed what he has heard from us?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
They did not know you. But if they did…they would ask!
What’s the difference between God as Creator and God as Father?
Ans: Relationship.
ADOPTION
ADOPTION
Jesus’ point, as we saw in an earlier study, is not that all men are God’s children by nature, but that his committed disciples have been adopted into God’s family by grace. (Packer 163)
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
Jesus stressed that his disciples should pray in his name and through him; that is, looking to him as our way of access to the Father. See , ; ; .
Only those who look to Jesus as Mediator and sin-bearer, and go to God through him, have any right to call on God as his sons.
God has no FAVORITES. We are all beloved in Christ.
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

What does this mean?
It means that Jesus Christ is not yet ruling in the hearts of men and women.

WORDS:
WORDS:
Matt 6:
Pray then like this:
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
HALLOW
HALLOW
Pray then like this:
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
To hallow God’s name means to hold it in reverence—hence, to hold him in reverence, to honor, glorify, and exalt him. (NIVAC)
This is the essence of the first three of the Ten Commandments: “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything.… You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God …” (; ). (NIVAC)
Basically this means to GLORIFY his name.
In this we are reminded of the shorter catechism:
the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.
Or John Piper:
“to glorify God by enjoying him forever”
YOUR NAME
YOUR NAME
He must increase, but I must decrease.”
They referred to God as `The Name', in order to avoid the use of the actual term Jehovah. So that the `name' here means God Himself...petition is to express this desire that God Himself may be revered, may be sanctified, that the very name of God and all it denotes and represents may be honoured amongst men, may be holy throughout the entire world.
It means God in all His attributes, God in all that He is in and of Himself, and God in all that He has done and all that He is doing.
Later He revealed Himself in that great and wonderful name Jehovah which really means `the self-existent One', `I am that I am', eternally self-existent. But there were other names in which God described Himself: `the Lord will provide' (Jehovah-jireh), `the Lord that healeth' (Jehovah-rapha), `the Lord our Banner' (Jehovah-nissi), `the Lord our peace' (Jehovah-Shalom), `the Lord our “Later He revealed Himself in that great and wonderful name Jehovah which really means `the self-existent One', `I am that I am', eternally self-existent. From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

HEAVEN
HEAVEN
“Which art in heaven” sets before us the fact that our divine Father is great—eternal, infinite, almighty:
as God’s creatures, exist in space and time; but when the Creator is said to be “in heaven” the thought is that he exists on a different plane from us, rather than in a different place. That God in heaven is always near to his children
nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”
