Introduction

ILLUSTRATION — Even the mightiest tree can only stand if it is rooted in stable soil.
A visitor from Minnesota was killed by a falling redwood in California’s famed Muir Woods National Monument.
The tree that killed the 28-year-old hiker was one of five that suddenly toppled in the wet park.
The hiker was walking along a dirt path with two other people when he was pinned by the 200-foot tree late Tuesday afternoon in what a park official called a “very rare” accident. The trunk of the tree that crushed Dutta measured four feet in diameter.
The hiker suffered traumatic injuries and was declared dead at the scene. He had been hiking with his sister, and her boyfriend, whom he was visiting for the holidays. His sister said that the three hikers scrambled to get out of the way as the tree came crashing down in seconds.
Duthu said she spotted “his shoe, my brother, and I noticed something was very wrong.” She described her bother as happy and cheerful. “We just happened to be at the wrong time at the wrong place.”
Heavy rainstorms have pelted the area in recent weeks, softening the earth around the roots of the park’s towering redwoods.
“These were visitors exactly where they are allowed to be,” the National Park Service spokesman said. “It just seems to be an unfortunate, tragic event.”
He called it a “very rare ... isolated event that may have occurred due to wet ground from recent winter storms, around the roots of the tree.
What are you rooted and grounded in?
What provides stability and strength to your life?
What is our church settled on?
Is it the people? They come and go?
Is it the building? They change and move?
Is it the community? It rapidly transforms
Is it the culture? It’s always moving and changing
This year, God is calling us to get back to our roots, to shore up the foundation, to test the soil we’ve settled into and fortify our faith in Him.
In a sort of brief overview, consider six ways in which we can be properly and Biblically Rooted & Grounded.

In Love

Ephesians 3:16–19 KJV 1900
That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
eph 3 16-
STRENGTHENED WITH MIGHT BY HIS SPIRIT
CHRIST DWELLS IN OUR HEARTS BY FAITH
ABLE TO COMPREHEND THE LOVE OF CHRIST
FILLED WITH ALL THE FULLNESS OF GOD
(In Love)

In Him

-
Colossians 2:6–7 KJV 1900
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
WALKING IN HIM
AS A SPIRITUAL HOUSE BUILT ON HIM AS THE FOUNDATION
STABLISHED IN THE FAITH
STAYING TRUE TO WHAT YOU’VE BEEN TAUGHT
ABOUNDING IN GRATITUDE
(In Love)
(In Him)

In the Faith

Colossians 1:21–23 KJV 1900
And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
col 1 21-
RECONCILED TO GOD THROUGH HIS DEATH
HOLY, UNBLAMEABLE, AND UNREPROVABLE
SETTLED, UNMOVING, UNWAVERING FROM THE HOPE OF THE GOSPEL WHICH WAS PREACHED TO US
(In Love)
(In Him)
(In the Faith)

On the Rock

Matthew 7:24–25 KJV 1900
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
WE HEAR THE WORD
WE OBEY THE WORD
WE STAND IN THE MIDST OF THE STORMS BECAUSE WE ARE FOUNDED AND GROUNDED IN HIS WORD
(In Love)
(In Him)
(In the Faith)
(On the Rock)

In Sound Doctrine

Hebrews 13:8–9 KJV 1900
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.
NOT CARRIED AWAY BY FALSE AND STRANGE DOCTRINES
ESTABLISHED IN OUR HEARTS BY THE GRACE OF GOD THROUGH FAITH
(In Love)
(In Him)
(In the Faith)
(On the Rock)
(In Sound Doctrine)

In Trials

1 Peter 5:10–11 KJV 1900
But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
BY GOD’S GRACE AND PURPOSE
FOR HIS ETERNAL GLORY BY THE WORK OF CHRIST
USE SUFFERINGS AND TRIALS TO PERFECT US, STABLISH US, STRENGTHEN US, AND SETTLE US, FOR HIS GLORY
CONCLUSION & ILLUSTRATION:
The tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, rises more than 2,700 feet—over half a mile tall. It has 160 floors and is twice as tall as the Empire State Building in New York City. It is home to the world’s fastest elevator that travels at 40 miles per hour. The Burj Khalifa also hosts the world’s highest outdoor observation deck (on the 124th floor) and the world’s highest swimming pool (on the 76th floor).
But the secret to the stability of this massive building is found underground. Before construction began to rise up, workers spent a year digging and pouring the massive foundation that supports the building. The foundation contains some 58,900 cubic yards of concrete weighing more than 110,000 tons. The building is safe because the foundation is solid.
This year, I look forward to reaching down deep into the soil of God’s Word with you, to discover together the strength, stability, and satisfaction that being Biblically rooted and grounded in Christ can provide.
