23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
A) The book of Romans is very special gift.
1) It was written by the Apostle Paul.
2) Most likely these believers are some who where there on the day of Pentecost and brought back the teaching to Rome.
3) The book teaches justification, propitiation, redemption, reconciliation, regeneration -adoption (Sons of God) and absolute assurance of the soul
4) Book has been used in law schools and theological seminaries
5) Students are taught logic
B) Justification: Legal term and used in the court of Law
1) Most people define justification as an excuse – Justify their actions
2) The biblical definition, you justify someone when you declare them not guilty and innocent and righteous in the eyes of the law.
3) It does not mean to make righteous, it means to declare righteous.
a. Hear the difference…. It is just a legal standing.
b. (EXAMPLE) If a person robs a bank, and found not guilty, is he still a bank robber?
c. We are still sinful, but God has declared us righteous in his court and his judgment.
C) Why must we, as believers be justified?
1) , “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…”
2) state “Let no man deceive you with vain words, for because of these things comes the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.”
3) also stated, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of man.”
4) In short, we are sinful and an enemy of God.
5) We have offended his Holiness.
D) How are we justified?
1) Christ died for our sins
2) Christ took our sins upon himself by a legal declaration
a. Let the Bible define it for itself.
b. “And the Lord has laid on Him (Jesus) the iniquity [Sin] of us all.”
c. “Who his own self bore our sins in His body on the tree.”
d. “For He [God the Father] made Him who knew no sin [Jesus] to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
3) Christ took our sins (Past, Present and Future) onto himself
4) Christ gave us his righteousness so we could stand before the Father without guilt or shame.
5) The believer is no longer guilty in the eyes of the Creator of world.
E) Christ became our substitution
1) Since God must punish those who bear the guilt of sin, He [God] pour out his wrath upon Jesus in our place.
2) He was punished for our sins and died in our place.
a. “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement for our peace was upon Him” ().
b. “And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying… “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” ().
F) Jesus death on the cross safeties God’s anger and justice.
1) “yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When thou [God the Father] shall make His [Jesus’] soul an offering for sin… He shall see the travail of His soulm and shall be satisfied.” ().
2) “When Jesus therefore received the vinegar, He said, “It is finished”, and He bowed his head ang gave up His spirit.” ().
3) The phrase “it is finished” was an expression in Roman Times
a. It meant “a debt is paid in full.”
b. Christ made a prefect and final payment for sin.
G) What does this mean for the believer and non-believer?
1) The believer is secured
2) The NON believer must stand for his sin in front of God
3) If you are a believer, take peace in this matter.
4) If you are a NON believer, don’t leave this room without contemplating and making a conscious choice to believe in the One who took away sin and enjoy the peace that comes with this.
