The Impeccable Sacrifice
INTRODUCTION
“The Gift of the Magi” by Ol Henry, tell the story of Jim and Della.
They were a young couple who were very poor.
Della was known for her beauty and the long beautiful hair.
She longed to have a beautiful comb to place in her hair.
Jim only had one prized possession.
He had inherited a gold watch from his grandfather.
He so desired to have a chain to attach the watch to his clothes.
In order to buy Christmas gifts for each other Jim sells his watch to buy combs for Della’s hair.
Della sold her hair to buy a chain for Jim’s watch.
They each made a huge sacrifice for the other.

I doubt there is anyone in this room this morning that has not made a sacrifice for someone they love this Christmas season.
None of our sacrifices compare to the sacrifice that we see laying in the manger.

ILL- Substitute Teacher (bring kids up on stage.)
Do you like having a substitute teacher?
What’s the best part of a substitute teacher?
Is a substitute better than having your real teacher?
Why?
Why not?
When I was in middle school and high school I loved substitutes.
Busy work and little structure.
Jesus died in our place- but different than this idea of a substitute.
He is a perfect substitute.
But maybe Impeccable is a better word.
Impeccable= in accordance with the highest standards of propriety; faultless.
2 Great Needs Satisfied by Jesus
The Need for Purity
Payment for our sins
Seen in Old Testament through Covering
And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
Day of Atonement
Once a year the High Priest was allowed to enter the Holy of Holies.
Two goats and one bull were brought to the Holy of Holies.
Lots were cast for the two goats.
One goat would be let go as a “scapegoat” and the other would be sacrificed for the sins of the people.
The High Priest would present the bull as a sin offering for himself.
The blood of the bull would be a covering for his sin and the blood of of the goat would cover the sins of the nation.
O.T. sacrifice was able to cover but not remove.
For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Jesus is a more perfect sacrifice.
he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.
By his wounds you have been healed.
The Need for Escape
Not receiving judgment we deserve.
Seen in Old Testament through Substitution- someone taking our place in the punishment.
Abraham and Isaac
Passover- the 10th Plague
How do we escape death?
Blood of a sacrifice.
Jesus is the final Passover Lamb.
14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover.
It was about the sixth hour.
He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” 15 They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!”
Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”
The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.
For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed
CONCLUSION
The baby in the manger is the perfect lamb born to take away the sins of the world.
The Lamb was born to die.
We sacrifice to give gifts at Christmas because of the example given to us by Jesus.
Have you accepted the gift of Jesus?
