Revelation 4:1–4 ESV
1 After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. 3 And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. 4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads.
Rev
Revelation 4:10–5:14 ESV
10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” 1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, 4 and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. 5 And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” 6 And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. 8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” 11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” 13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” 14 And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped.
God on his throne
Living creatures and elders- Probably 12 OT and 12 NT- representative of all.
The New American Commentary: Revelation (2) The Cherubim (4:5–11)

Holy is the Father, Holy is the Son, and Holy is the Spirit.” This is followed by the emphasis on the unity of the Godhead, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.” Further, the eternity of God is expressed in the words, “who was, and is, and is to come.”

Scroll written on both sides- complete message.
Revelation: An Introduction and Commentary a. The Unopened Book (5:1–4)

This seems to mean that the scroll lay on the palm, not that it was held in the hand. A scroll would be made up of sheets of papyrus joined edge to edge until the length required for the book was reached. The papyrus sheet was made by placing thin strips of papyrus in two layers at right angles to one another, and joining them with glue, Nile water and pressure. The side with the horizontal strips provided a better writing surface than that where they were vertical. Generally this side alone was used. But if space was important it was quite possible to write on the other side also. This was the case with the roll John saw, for it was written on both sides. It was as full as it could possibly be

Sealed- only one with authority- seven seals-complete authority.
No one worthy- John weeps.
Stop weeping- John! There is one worthy.
Lion and Lamb- Great chorus- Worthy is the Lamb!
Revelation: An Introduction and Commentary b. The Lion of the Tribe of Judah (5:5–14)

What John appears to be telling us in his different symbols is that Christ, of the tribe of Judah and the line of David, is supremely powerful and all-knowing, and that he has won his victory by his atoning and sacrificial death. There is a striking combination of the utmost in power and the utmost in self-giving.

Sermon in a sentence: Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone is worthy of everything in your life and mine.
I. Worthiness seen in Power as Creator (Ch 4).
He has made you. Rightful claim on your life.

3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He was in the beginning with God.

3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.

5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

14 And the Word became flesh, and cdwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,

20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Heb 1:1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,

2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power

“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,

and the heavens are the work of your hands;

Jesus has a rightful claim on your life and mine. He is Worthy!
Illustration: Heather—pregnant with Adalyn, difficult, Difficult birth. After born, If this child ever talks back to me or rolls her eyes at me as a teenager after all this, I don’t know what I’ll do!
In a sense, she had made her—carried her and birthed her and loves her unconditionally. The idea that she could ever rebel against her seems outlandish.
But isn’t that what we do?
We read his word, or hear a message from his word that rubs us the wrong way, so we roll our eyes at God and go our own way.
We rebel against him as people—we shake our fist at God and declare we are going to live our life, our way and we can do just fine.
When He came to earth, we rejected him, we cried Crucify Him, we mocked him, we beat him, we crowned him with a crown of thorns. We nailed him to a cross and spat on him and happily watched God our creator die!
We are still doing it! No creator= no accountability!
II. Worthiness seen in sacrifice as redeemer. Ch 5
“You have redeemed us”

9 And they sang a new song, saying,

“Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.

All people— with his blood.
Illustration: Boy with Boat. “First I made you, now I bought you. You are twice mine now.”
Poem: “Wonder of wonders vast surprise. Could bigger wonder be—That He who made the starry skies once bled and died for me?
Amazing startling sacrifice. Confounding all our thought. Stupendous staggering purchase price which our redeemer bought!”
III. Worthiness should be seen in our response to Him as Lord
“Worthy, O lamb of God art thou that every knew to thee should bow”

11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands,

12 saying with a loud voice,

“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.”

13 And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying,

“To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”

14 And the four living creatures kept saying, “Amen.” And the elders fell down and worshiped.

Worthy of worship—praise
Worthy of our possessions, time
Worthy of our service, loyalty
Worthy of a Holy Life
Worthy of our trust
Worthy of our open profession of faith.
Conclusion: No way we could be worthy of Him. He is worthy of more than we have to offer! No wonder some of us hesitate to come to him and surrender.
