Introduction
Commentaries. Just saying that word conjures up a lot of strong feelings in peoples’ minds. Within our circles, those are usually strong negative feelings.
I have observed peoples attitudes about them and the presuppositions that undergird peoples minds, and I believe that many of the issues that are discussed are based on misunderstandings about the nature and practice of commentaries.
To fix these issues, we need to ask a few questions:
What are commentaries intended to do?
How can commentaries be useful? How can they be dangerous?
Are all commentaries the same?
