That cynical deviser of definitions, Ambrose Bierce, once said that human birth was “the first and direct of all disasters.” I find no record that Mr. and Mrs. Bierce had a family, so we can’t blame what he said on their children. Perhaps it was the neighbor’s children that made Ambrose write such a depressing definition.
However, there is a sense in which human birth does share in a “great disaster” because each of us is born with a sinful nature. It doesn’t take new parents long to discover this sad fact about their little darlings.
