Introduction

1 Corinthians 15:51–57 KJV 1900
51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

I. The Occurence (51-52)

1 Corinthians 15:51–52 KJV 1900
51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1 cor 1
I tell a mystery
Paul is telling the church here, “a mistery I tell”
This is to be a secret from God’s direct revelation to them.
It is importent for us to note here that Paul is dealing with things which defy language and baffle expression.
This would make no since to the church.
Paul says here look, I am about to tell you something importent that you will not understand
What is death
Death is the temporary cesation of Bodolly functions death is not a perminate state but a temporary state for the believer and the unbelieve death is temporary
What is the mistery
1. in a moment,
2. in the twinkling of an eye,
3. at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound,
4. the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
In a moment
This word litterally means a inivisible moment. it is a place in time so small it can not be split into other times
Twinkeling of an eye
THis is an add on to the privious word this word meand a mompent that is rapid
So we know the rapture will come quickly in a single moment but when will that moment be?
At the last trump
What is the last trump?
Two views
Donald trump- im not even doing to spend time on this one because of how insane it is
The last of the trumpets in the book of revelation
Post trib rapture Believers hold this view
Problums
1. Paul wrote to the corinthians many years prior to the book of revelation
2. all references in the eppisles look backward (Paul was not a profit nor did he ever claim to be)
-if this was the 7th trumpet in Revelation this would have been the one and only place Paul looked foward and prophisied
We do however see Jesues mention a trumpet upon his return in Matthew
Matthew 24:31 KJV 1900
31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
To Paul this would have been the last trump
The same event is seen in the OT
Joel 2:1 KJV 1900
1 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: For the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
Isaiah 22:12–13 ESV
12 In that day the Lord God of hosts called for weeping and mourning, for baldness and wearing sackcloth; 13 and behold, joy and gladness, killing oxen and slaughtering sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine. “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
Joel 2:30–31 ESV
30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
Both of theese occurences happen before any trumpets in Revelation are found.
Zechariah 9:14 KJV 1900
14 And the Lord shall be seen over them, And his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: And the Lord God shall blow the trumpet, And shall go with whirlwinds of the south.
Zechariah 9:12 ESV
12 Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.
THis verse is describing the Lords return depicted in 1 thes 4:16
Zechariah 9:13 ESV
13 For I have bent Judah as my bow; I have made Ephraim its arrow. I will stir up your sons, O Zion, against your sons, O Greece, and wield you like a warrior’s sword.
but notice whaat it says
Zechariah 9:11 ESV
11 As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.
“The Lord God will sound the trumpet”
Now lets observe who will blow the trumpet in Revelation
Revelation 10:7 KJV 1900
7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.
“The seventh angel”
so the last trump is a trump that will be sounded in rapture that could happen at any momet
What a wonderful sound that will be!
The dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed
The dead will be raised imperishable
those who have passed away will be raised imortal
even those who are dead and decaying will be rased and they will be raised imortal
The living will be changed
Rember what says
1 Thessalonians 4:17 ESV
17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
1 Thessalonians 4:13–17 KJV 1900
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

upon the rapture bothe the bodies of the living and the dead will be changed II. The happenings

1 Corinthians 15:53 KJV 1900
53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
Paul informs the corintinan church that in the rapture everyone will leave behind their old bodies.
This was the original intent in creation God created man in innocence to have an incoruptible body and this again will be enjoyed in the end.
I could spend a ton of time here going through the bodies of the saved and the unsaved and those born during the millinim but we simply do not have time for that this morning but I will make this one note this changed body is refering to the saved dead and alive

III. THe results (54-57)

1 Corinthians 15:54–57 KJV 1900
54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul quotes here both and
Isaiah 25:8 KJV 1900
8 He will swallow up death in victory; And the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; And the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: For the Lord hath spoken it.
Hos 1
Hosea 13:14 KJV 1900
14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: Repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.
The reserction of believers causes us to be able to say
O death where is your victory
O death where is your victory
O death where is your sting
Why does death exist?
death exists because of sin
our sin was paid for at the cross
THerfore we know that When Christ comes for his Church the believer will never face death again
This event concludes the church
1 Corinthians 15:57 KJV 1900
57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
I love that word in scripture… but
in ephesians the word is used to show the heart of the gospel...
Ephesians 2:3–4 KJV 1900
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
here we see that
death had victory
death had sting
but thanks be to God because of the death of Jesues Christ
death has no victory
death has no sting
Praise God!
