Communion

Communion’s Purpose

Exodus 12:13 KJV 1900
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
John 1:29 KJV 1900
29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
What is Christ called in John 1.29?
What does John say Christ is able to do?
Compare Hebrews 10:4, 10 with I John 1:7. What can Christ do that Old Testament sacrifices could not?
Hebrews 10:4 KJV 1900
4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
Hebrews 10:10 KJV 1900
10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
1 John 1:7 KJV 1900
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Understanding the inadequacy of Old Testament sacrifices, why did Christ’s body have to be “given for you” (Luke 22:19, 15)?
Luke 22:19 NASB95
19 And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
Luke 22:15 KJV 1900
15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:
Read Luke 22:7-20 to answer the following questions: In verse 19, what did Christ use to represent His body?
Luke 22:19 KJV 1900
19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Jesus instructed the disciples to eat the bread “in remembrance of me” (v. 19). What does that mean?
Following the bread, Christ used something as a representative of His blood (v. 20). What was it?
Luke 22:20 KJV 1900
20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
Why was Christ’s blood so important for our salvation?
Hebrews 9:22 KJV 1900
22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
1 John 1:7 KJV 1900
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Communion is first of all a remembrance of Christ’s death. However, it is also a reminder of something else ( I Corinthians 11:26; Luke 22:16, 18). What is it?
1 Corinthians 11:26 KJV 1900
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
Luke 22:16 KJV 1900
16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
Luke 22:18 KJV 1900
18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.

Participating in Communion

1 Corinthians 11:27–31 KJV 1900
27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
What are some extreme examples of judgement for abuse of the Lord’s table (v. 30)?
What does it mean to partake of the Lord’s Table in a worthy manner?

Only Christians should partake of the Lord’s Table.

1 Corinthians 11:29 KJV 1900
29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

Only Christians who are in fellowship with God should partake of the Lord’s Table.

1 Corinthians 11:28 KJV 1900
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
Between the warnings in I Corinthians 11:27-29 is a command in verse 28. What is it?
1 Corinthians 11:31 KJV 1900
31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
What promise is given those who judge themselves (v. 31)?
Psalm 139:23–24 KJV 1900
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: Try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.

Christians must partake of the Lord’s Table reverently.

If communion is intended to be a memorial of Christ’s death for you, what should your mind dwell on during the communion service (in addition to self-examination)? Be specific.

Christians must partake of the Lord’s Table in unity.

Acts 20:7 KJV 1900
7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
Acts 2:42–44 KJV 1900
42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
What four things did Christians continue doing (Acts 2:42)?
What was their attitude toward each other (Acts 2:44)?
Why is the Lord’s supper practiced repeatedly unlike baptism (I Corinthians 11:26)?
1 Corinthians 11:26 KJV 1900
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

Communion’s Perversion

The means of grace error.

The Mass error.

According to I Peter 3:18 how many times did Christ suffer and die?
1 Peter 3:18 KJV 1900
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
Which words describe the number of time Christ had to be sacrificed in Hebrews 10:10-12?
Hebrews 10:10–12 KJV 1900
10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: 12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
By comparison, the priest’s work was unending. Which words describe the number of the priests has to offer sacrifices?
Verse 12 concludes by saying that Jesus offered one sacrifice for sins for ever. What did He do to signify that He was finished?
Hebrews 12:2 KJV 1900
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The change of substance error.

John 10:7 KJV 1900
7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
John 8:12 KJV 1900
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Luke 13:32 KJV 1900
32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.
1 Corinthians 11:26 KJV 1900
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
Luke 22:19 KJV 1900
19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
