Part 1 - The Doctrine of Salvation
Text - 1 Timothy 2.3-6
Objective
To help the class understand God’s plan and purpose in the salvation of sinners.
Salvation and God
Salvation and God
Salvation is a work of God
Salvation is a work of God
Only God is the Savior.
3 For I am the Lord your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I gave Egypt for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in your place.
11 I, even I, am the Lord, And besides Me there is no savior.
4 “Yet I am the Lord your God Ever since the land of Egypt, And you shall know no God but Me; For there is no savior besides Me.
The salvation of God was manifested in flesh in the Man Jesus.
11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
God’s mercy saved the sinner.
4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared,
5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
Salvation is God’s gift
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
God desires all men to be saved
God desires all men to be saved
Our text says God desires all men to be saved.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
However, not everyone will be saved simply because God desires it.
God’s desire expresses His love for everyone
God’s saving work is “conditional”
Salvation and Man
Salvation and Man
What is man’s invovlement in his own salvation?
Salvation entails knowledge of the truth
Salvation entails knowledge of the truth
Our text says salvation involves knowledge of the truth.
knowledge of the truth - means to be personally acquainted with the truth
Knowledge of the truth leads to repentance.
Repentance is the acknowledgement of one’s sins and sinfulness
Knowledge of the truth leads to faith.
Together, repentance and faith are the two conditions of salvation.
10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Knowledge of the truth leads to love of the truth.
9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,
10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
Salvation entails Action
Salvation entails Action
Faith should lead to water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ.
16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
Faith also leads to renouncemnt of ungodliness and worly lusts, and a commitment to live sober, righteous, and godly in expectation of the glorious appearing of Christ.
11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men,
12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,
13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
Salvation and Christ
Salvation and Christ
Salvation is in Christ alone
Salvation is in Christ alone
12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Salvation is Guaranteed in Christ
Salvation is Guaranteed in Christ
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.
10 and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.
25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
uttermost - completely, wholly, or forever
5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,
39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Salvation is the gracious gift of God to the sinner who believes in Jesus Christ for the salvation of his soul from the power of sin and its penalty of death.
