Philippians
12 Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you; 16 however, let us keep living by that same standard to which we have attained.

Written to encourage and thank the church at Philippi
12 Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.
13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,
14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you;
16 however, let us keep living by that same standard to which we have attained.
Philippians 3:
Press On...
Press On...
Press on to what?
To lay hold of that which Jesus Christ already did.
8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,
9 and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,
10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;
11 in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Old life: Before Christ: covered by the blood
How often does past bondage become a disqualifier for Christ’s love, simply b/c we will not let it go?
Jesus breaks the chains of bondage and we sneak back to them and shackle ourselves all the while stressing over not being worthy!
Self-righteousness: All things we do are b/c of salvation not for salvation
Failure: For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.
This is not amnesia but an intentional not holding something against yourself. example from So she said to Elijah, “What do I have to do with you, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my iniquity to remembrance and to put my son to death!”
For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.
So she said to Elijah, “What do I have to do with you, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my iniquity to remembrance and to put my son to death!”
So she said to Elijah, “What do I have to do with you, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my iniquity to remembrance and to put my son to death!”

There is a need to strive for perfection (maturity, completion)
Single-minded focus
Single-minded focus
v.13 “one thing”
Some of the words used by Paul to describe the Christian walk:
stand firm
work
run
labor
This is not a passive endeavor undertaken by one simple sinner’s prayer and completed by attending church most Sundays.
Anyone ever heard the phrase “Let go and Let God...”
It is only half of the phrase “…prepare you to actively pursue Him.”
Central desire

v. 14 The goal of the prize of the upward call...
It isn’t described but it is talked about in what it is not
Many scriptures come to mind
Well done good and faithful servant
crown of righteousness
blood cleansed robe
no more tears or suffering
no eye has seen nor ear heard
Sure foundation
Sure foundation
righteousness not of his own but from God
Saved by grace through faith
Grace is the root and holiness is the fruit.
What are you doing to reach forward to that one thing?
What effort do you put into your race?
What is your goal?
Will your current effort yield your desired outcome?
