God’s Call Rejected

A. THE CALL—vv.

1. God’s call—v. . As God called Jonah, so He calls all Christians—.

2. God’s challenge—v. . God wanted Jonah to go and preach to Nineveh, a city of people who had no concern about God.

God calls everyone. However, those who are spiritually deaf don’t hear this call, and those who are hardhearted ignore it.

B. THE CALLOUSNESS—v.

1. Disobedience—“went to Tarshish.” This was in the opposite direction of Nineveh.

2. Downward—“Went down.” When one runs from God, he goes downward in many phases of his life.

3. Departure—“From the presence of the Lord.” Jonah tried to escape God’s presence, which is impossible—see .

C. THE CONFUSION—vv.

1. Storm—v. . Storms always come when one disobeys God.

2. Sleeping—v. . During the storm, Jonah was asleep. He felt no concern for what was happening about him.

3. Safety—v. . The sailors begged Jonah to call upon his God. Jonah was ashamed to call upon God, since he was running from Him.

4. Sorrow—vv. . Running from God causes others to suffer. God sent a storm because of Jonah’s disobedience, but the whole crew on the ship was affected.

D. THE CONFESSION—vv.

1. Problem—v. . Running from God made Jonah fearful.

2. Price—v. . There is a price to pay when one rejects God.

3. Plan—vv. . Jonah asked to be thrown into the raging sea.

4. Patience—vv. . The sailors didn’t want to throw Jonah into the water, since they didn’t know that God would protect him.

E. THE COMPASSION—vv.

1. Casting—v. . The sea stopped raging. In the same way, confession and cleansing brings inner peace.

2. Confession—v. . The sailors vowed to serve Jehovah. They were more godly than Jonah at that point.

3. Compassion—v. . God had prepared a great fish. God could have let Jonah die, but God had a mission for him.
