Intro
Without meaning to, we easily create dualities in life
work / home
friends / family
words / thoughts
Not exactly bad, but easily problematic—esp with faith
*** Not that don’t mean it—just not made real / practical
(Later—sold on the idea / practicing the reality——believed / disciples) (bound-up believers)
Goal today—start of new year, have an approach… understand… be ready to...
(Real World Faith)
SCR- Luke 2:
INFO
No one more real world than these guys
** workaday; left out of teh important people’s table,
*** God chose them to reveal
interesting phrase- “see the words”
** We know figures of speech (raining cats…, White House says…, etc.,
THis is Hebraism… (life figure…—but more—God’s people have always known that words are powerful
** Cf difference between rhema, logos, graphe—big idea (chair), words- recliner, brochure / tag explaining chair
creative power...
revealing power
*** Words represent an unseen reality
sometimes because invisible (spiritual things)
often more mundane but no less profound—there’s something real and available to you, and if no one tells you, you’ll miss it
*** Cf donuts at Delta—why didn’t anyone tell me?
Teachers use it to empower with math, science, history...
Doctors use it to...
Car manufactureres ...
Chefs ...
Parents ...
*** No idea how many times I have said, “I wish I had listened more, sooner”
And these words are always...
heavens are declaring...
Isaiah—keep telling them...
he who has an ear to hear...
WHAT THEY SHOW US is not simply how this works, but what it takes to get it
it was their openness (to new things)
it was their disposition (not complaining, harping on negative—send angels away depressed--
it was their availability—we’re willing to go after it—nothing standing in the way
*** Good-news ready”
IMPLICATIUONS
These words are around for us
God’s Words represent realities available to us
Thaty’s why Jesus’s words in are so important--”Jesus said to those Jews who believed...” Discussion re: these--”saved or not?”
A little premature—before cross so not exactly about saved, but perfectly paints the picture.
Many of us in environment- “just believe!” True- .
But notice WORDS!
Language.
Said to those who BELIEVED, if you continue—my DISCIPLES!
Not every believer is a disciple.
At least not a real one.
Doesn’t mean not saved.
Believers get in, disciples get better.
Believers get saved.
Disciples get whole.
Believers get to heaven.
Disciples bring heaven to earth.
These shepherd-like moments where God reveals something—revelation is invitation.
Invitation to follow.
And this, when we follow, makes us disciples, and therein we enjoy the benefits of being followers.
eventually—not just the message they got, but what they do with the words...
