John 1:1 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 The Message
The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, Generous inside and out, true from start to finish.
John
What comes into our minds when we think about Jesus is the most important thing about us. A.W. Tozer
Jesus moved into our neighborhood so that we can KNOW him.
Acts 17:22–23 ESV
So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.
ACTS 17:22
It’s God will for us to know him.
Jeremiah 9:23–24 ESV
Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”
Jeremiah 31:33–34 ESV
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”
Jeremiah 33
The works of Jesus enable us to know him.
John 17:1–4 ESV
When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.
John 17:3 ESV
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
Hosea 2:20 ESV
I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the Lord.
He is worth knowing.
A little knowledge of Christ is worth more than a great deal of knowledge about Him. J.I. Packer
Knowing Jesus is your single greatest privilege as a Christian. Sinclair Ferguson
Philippians 3:3–10 ESV
For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh— though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,
There’s a difference between knowing Jesus and knowing about Jesus. When you truly know Christ, you have energy to serve Him, boldness to share him, and contentment in Him.
Questions
Are you suspicious of you knowledge of Jesus?
Are you satisfied with your knowledge of Jesus?
Jesus moved into our neighborhood so that we can know that he KNOWS and LOVES us.
Jesus experienced real temptation to sin so that we can really overcome sin’s temptation.
Hebrews 4:14–16 ESV
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:1
Jesus knows what it is like to experience our experiences. He is not a cold, emotionless judge, or a flawed, fickle spirit. He is the only One who has both experienced and overcome the power of sin and temptation. As the next verse shows, this not only takes away our excuses for failure, it gives us reassurance that, when we fail, He will offer us mercy and compassion.
Jesus became sin so that we could become sons and daughters.
“The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.
Romans 5:8 ESV
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
“To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is, well, a lot like being loved by God. It is what we need more than anything. It liberates us from pretense, humbles us out of our self-righteousness, and fortifies us for any difficulty life can throw at us.” Tim Keller
When Jesus looked down from the cross, he didn't think "I am giving myself to you because you are so attractive to me." No, he was in agony, and he looked down at us - denying him, abandoning him, and betraying him - and in the greatest act of love in history, he STAYED. He said, "Father, forgive them, they don't know what they are doing." He loved us, not because we were lovely to him, but to make us lovely.
Jesus moved into our neighborhood so that we can BECOME like him to our neighbor(hood).
Jesus incarnated so that we can imitate.
Ephesians 5:1 ESV
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.
Luke 10:36–37 ESV
Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
Notice the last word in the lawyer’s answer, mercy. Why not word the grace? The lawyer felt as though the man deserved his fate. Grace gives us the gift we do not deserve while mercy does not give us the punishment we deserve. We must treat those we meet on the Jericho Road with mercy for Christ found us on that road. We were beaten and battered. No strength to care for ourselves or call out for help. The god’s whom we trusted left us. Those whom we worshipped those god’s with passed by on the other side. We deserved our fate for we had put our faith in others god’s but God being rich in mercy because of the great love with which he loved us healed our hurts, rubbed balm into our brokenness, and paid in full my debt. Christ became my neighbor so that I can be a neighbor to others. This is why Jesus said greater works than these shall you do. Which is greater one Jesus incarnate or millions of Christians imitating Christ.

I'm signing up for the journey with you. Would you sign up for the journey to my true self with me? It's going to be hard but I want to get there.” ― Timothy Kellertags: falling-in-love, keller, love, relationships303 likesLike“It is not the strength of your faith but the object of your faith that actually saves you.” ― Timothy Kellertags: faith280 likesLike“The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.” ― Timothy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of Godtags: christianity, hope, love, religion, sin245 likesLike“Tolerance isn't about not having beliefs. It's about how your beliefs lead you to treat people who disagree with you.” ― Timothy Kellertags: respect, tolerance221 likesLike“If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that he said; if he didn't rise from the dead, then why worry about any of what he said? The issue on which everything hangs is not whether or not you like his teaching but whether or not he rose from the dead.” ― Timothy Keller, The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticismtags: belief, resurrection, skepticism204 likesLike“In any relationship, there will be frightening spells in which your feelings of love dry up. And when that happens you must remember that the essence of marriage is that it is a covenant, a commitment, a promise of future love. So what do you do? You do the acts of love, despite your lack of feeling. You may not feel tender, sympathetic, and eager to please, but in your actions you must BE tender, understanding, forgiving and helpful. And, if you do that, as time goes on you will not only get through the dry spells, but they will become less frequent and deep, and you will become more constant in your feelings. This is what can happen if you decide to love.” ― Timothy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of Godtags: love, marriage, passion181 likesLike“Believers should acknowledge and wrestle with doubts... It is no longer sufficient to hold beliefs just because you inherited them.” ― Timothy Keller152 likesLike“God will only give you what you would have asked for if you knew everything he knows” ― Timothy Kellertags: inspirational-religious131 likesLike“Friendship is a deep oneness that develops when two people, speaking the truth in love to one another, journey together to the same horizon.” ― Timothy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of Godtags: friendship125 likesLike“The basic premise of religion– that if you live a good life, things will go well for you– is wrong. Jesus was the most morally upright person who ever lived, yet He had a life filled with the experience of poverty, rejection, injustice, and even torture.” ― Tim Keller125 likesLike“The gospel of justifying faith means that while Christians are, in themselves still sinful and sinning, yet in Christ, in God’s sight, they are accepted and righteous. So we can say that we are more wicked than we ever dared believe, but more loved and accepted in Christ than we ever dared hope — at the very same time. This creates a radical new dynamic for personal growth. It means that the more you see your own flaws and sins, the more precious, electrifying, and amazing God’s grace appears to you. But on the other hand, the more aware you are of God’s grace and acceptance in Christ, the more able you are to drop your denials and self-defenses and admit the true dimensions and character of your sin.” ― Timothy Kellertags: gospel-centred124 likesLike“When you listen and read one thinker, you become a clone… two thinkers, you become confused… ten thinkers, you’ll begin developing your own voice… two or three hundred thinkers, you become wise and develop your voice.” ― Timothy Keller119 likesLike“When people say, "I know God forgives me, but I can't forgive myself," they mean that they have failed an idol, whose approval is more important than God's.” ― Timothy Keller, Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope that Matterstags: idolatry117 likesLike“Love without truth is sentimentality; it supports and affirms us but keeps us in denial about our flaws. Truth without love is harshness; it gives us information but in such a way that we cannot really hear it. God's saving love in Christ, however, is marked by both radical truthfulness about who we are and yet also radical, unconditional commitment to us. The merciful commitment strengthens us to see the truth about ourselves and repent. The conviction and repentance moves us to cling to and rest in God's mercy and grace.” ― Timothy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of Godtags: god, love100 likesLike“Within this Christian vision of marriage, here's what it means to fall in love. It is to look at another person and get a glimpse of what God is creating, and to say, "I see who God is making you, and it excites me! I want to be part of that. I want to partner with you and God in the journey you are taking to his throne. And when we get there, I will look at your magnificence and say, 'I always knew you could be like this. I got glimpses of it on earth, but now look at you!” ― Timothy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God99 likesLike“...We must say to ourselves something like this: 'Well, when Jesus looked down from the cross, he didn't think "I am giving myself to you because you are so attractive to me." No, he was in agony, and he looked down at us - denying him, abandoning him, and betraying him - and in the greatest act of love in history, he STAYED. He said, "Father, forgive them, they don't know what they are doing." He loved us, not because we were lovely to him, but to make us lovely. That is why I am going to love my spouse.' Speak to your heart like that, and then fulfill the promises you made on your wedding day.” ― Timothy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of Godtags: covenant, jesus, love, marriage97 likesLike“A faith without some doubts is like a human body with no antobodies in it. People who blithely go through life too busy or indifferent to ask the hard questions about why they believe as they do will find themselves defenseless against either the experience of tragedy or the probing questions of a smart skeptic. A person's faith can collapse almost overnight if she failed over the years to listen patiently to her own doubts, which should only be discarded after long reflection.” ― Tim Keller97 likesLike“Men, you'll never be a good groom to your wife unless you're first a good bride to Jesus.” ― Timothy Kellertags: husband, keller, manhood, marriage, relationships94 likesLike“You can only afford to be generous if you actually have some money in the bank to give. In the same way, if your only source of love and meaning is your spouse, then anytime he or she fails you, it will not just cause grief but a psychological cataclysm. If, however, you know something of the work of the Spirit in your life, you have enough love "in the bank" to be generous to your spouse even when you are not getting much affection or kindness at the moment.” ― Timothy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of Godtags: holy-spirit, isolation, love, marriage90 likesLike“We modern people think of miracles as the suspension of the natural order, but Jesus meant them to be the restoration of the natural order. The Bible tells us that God did not originally make the world to have disease, hunger, and death in it. Jesus has come to redeem where it is wrong and heal the world where it is broken. His miracles are not just proofs that he has power but also wonderful foretastes of what he is going to do with that power. Jesus' miracles are not just a challenge to our minds, but a promise to our hearts, that the world we all want is coming.” ― Timothy Keller, The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism87 likesLike“Real love, the Bible says, instinctively desires permanence.” ― Timothy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of Godtags: biblical-love, marriage, permanence, timothy-keller85 likesLike“When over the years someone has seen you at your worst, and knows you with all your strengths and flaws, yet commits him- or herself to you wholly, it is a consummate experience. Joy-based repentance makes us hate the sin.” ― Timothy Keller, Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope that Matters79 likesLike“The Christian Gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me. This leads to deep humility and deep confidence at the same time. It undermines both swaggering and sniveling. I cannot feel superior to anyone, and yet I have nothing to prove to anyone. I do not think more of myself nor less of myself. Instead, I think of myself less.”
