AG: New vs. Old
In the 1980’s, Pepsi was marketing themselves aggressively to the “Pepsi generation” and had ads running all the time showing a blind taste test.
Coke was loosing market share to Pepsi and wanted to stay on top. They had a brilliant idea to change the formula and branded it New Coke. It was supposedly “a smoother, rounder yet bolder and harmonious flavor.”
They released New Coke and rolled out their own marketing.
It was a colossal flop! Within weeks Coke was receiving over 5000 angry calls a day then it grew to 8000. There were protests and one loyal Coke drinker sued to make them bring back “real Coke.” 79 days after its release, Coke switched back to the old recipe.
New isn’t always better.
TS: I think that is why God through our author has spent so much time on this very topic. In our text this morning, our author continues comparing and contrasting the old and new covenants. This passage goes back into the role of Christ as sacrifice and priest.

Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.
For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established.
For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.
Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood.
For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,
saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.”
And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship.
Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

HE was the ransom to pay for sins and set us free.
He mediated between God and Humanity
Will
Much like our last will and testiment
A will spells out what is to be done with our possessions and dependents. We spell out and direct how our estate is to be managed and who is to be the beneficiaries of it.
Takes effect by death
Jesus’ death not only freed us from sins, it activated the benefits of the New Covenant

And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship.

for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
Life is in the Blood!
The Bible stated that long before secular science realized it.
Ancient medicine:
believed our health dealt with 4 humors
Phlegm, yellow bile, black bile, and blood
All disease was an imbalance of the humors
To “treat” patients, they let blood out to rebalance
IL: George Washington was ill with what is believed to be pneumonia. The best medical treatment of the day included ingestion of Mercury and letting his blood. It is estimated they removed up to 5 pints of his blood and that caused shock which ultimately killed him.
Penalty for sin is death
Life must be sacrificed to pay for sin
Both old and new covenants are in harmony on this.

God has been using our author to set in contrast the old and new.
Now, that contrast comes into sharp focus

Temporary
earthly, set time they last
Copies- literally antitype
They picture the true, but are mere shadows of the real heaven
Repeatedly
Sacrifices went on all the time
It was a continuous affair because sin was always with them.
There was a regular calendar of special offerings.
NEW:
Christ died once for all
HE entered heaven before the Father once for all
Christ will return to culminate salvation in the resurrection once for all.

We will all die once

It is inevitable and the way of all flesh
We age, we grow ill, we eventually will breath our last

We will all face the judgment
After we take our final breath, we face the judgment
There are 2 outcomes:
Eternal life with Christ and the redeemed.
Eternal death in hell with Satan and those who rejected Christ’s offered salvation.
MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION: What makes the difference in outcomes?
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.
And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.
Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

And what puts us in the Lamb’s Book of Life?
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him.
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
