Self-actualization (DEFINE)
You can’t have a higher one without all the lower ones. (ILL: A person who is hungry and in danger cannot be consumed with the philosophical concepts necesary to know who they really are.)
Greater Hierarchy
We don’t live for more and more like the Gentiles (20, cf. 19)
How we know Christ
Hearing about him
Teaching by/of him
Believing the truth in him
Self-actualization is the way of the world
self-actualization is knowing the old-self
putting on the new-self means we realize who we are in Christ
The way of Jesus is to realize who God made you to be—righteous, holy, in every way

Definition of Self-actualization
[MASLOW SLIDE] Flaw, ILL: Hangry (A self-actualized person can still not work hungry)
Still a good tool for understanding
SA is about becoming the best version of yourself
humanism
issue is the sinful nature
Gentiles live for more and more (19) — your best life now
There’s something bigger when you know Christ
“Your best life now” is not how you came to know Christ (20)
Assuming you do know him (21) — hearing, teaching, believing (truth)
You know Christ by taking off the old self (22)
more and more = deceitful desires
SA is getting the best portion of what the flesh wants out of this life
“and to put on the new self” (24a)
How? (23, cf. ) believing and filling your mind with truth
What is the new self? (24)
God’s likeness (cf. Genesis), righteousness, purity of truth
Truth purifies us—makes us righteous, restores God’s likeness
Jesus is the truth and Maslow [ALTERNATE SLIDES]
What does this look like? How does Jesus minister to the person in every stage?
Explain how Jesus gives us a better reality than Maslow
