Intro/Hook

Worship in the Heavens (1-2)

1 Honor the LORD, you heavenly beings;

honor the LORD for his glory and strength.

2 Honor the LORD for the glory of his name.

Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.

This Psalm opens with a command to the heavens to give honor and praise to Yahweh. The Lord is so full of majesty that even the angels must bow down and honor Him. David gives four reasons for the heavenly beings to give honor to the Lord.
First, He is to receive honor because of His glory.
Second, His strength.
Third, His name.
Finally, He is to be worshipped because of His holiness.
If even the angels give honor and bow down to such a wonderful God, how much more should we? This is the first time we ask the question: How will you respond when you hear the voice of the Lord?

The Thunder of His voice (3-4)

3 The voice of the LORD echoes above the sea.

The God of glory thunders.

The LORD thunders over the mighty sea.

4 The voice of the LORD is powerful;

the voice of the LORD is majestic.

Yahweh’s voice is thunderous and loud. If you have been to the ocean, you know that the sea is very loud. The sounds of the waves crashing makes it so you need to talk loud in order to have a conversation with anyone. If you actually go out into the middle of the sea, it is even louder. The volume of God’s voice beats the sounds of the waves by a large amount. God’s glorious voice thunders above the whole ocean as a massive storm. There are sounds we hear that our loud and can be clearly heard. The sound of a moto honking at you to get out of the way. Or the sound of the call to prayer from the mosques. Or the sound of roosters crowing early in the morning. The voice of Yahweh is loud and distinct, and it is impossible to miss. How will you respond when you hear the voice of the Lord?

The Hurricane of His voice (5-6)

5 The voice of the LORD splits the mighty cedars;

the LORD shatters the cedars of Lebanon.

6 He makes Lebanon’s mountains skip like a calf;

he makes Mount Hermon leap like a young wild ox.

Windy storms can have dramatic effects. It can blow down trees, shake up buildings, cause fields of dust and have nasty effects on the surrounding environment. Wherever intense winds go, it leaves a massive imprint of the land. This is the same with Yahweh’s voice. David declares that it is Yahweh’s voice that has the strength to tear apart mighty trees, and shake up whole mountains. This is a stronger effect than a mere wind can produce. Yahweh leaves an impact wherever He speaks, and His voice cannot be missed. How will you respond when you hear the voice of the Lord?

The destruction of His voice (7-9)

7 The voice of the LORD strikes

with bolts of lightning.

8 The voice of the LORD makes the barren wilderness quake;

the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

9 The voice of the LORD twists mighty oaks

and strips the forests bare.

The response to Yahweh’s voice (9b)

In his Temple everyone shouts, “Glory!”

Yahweh is King (10-11)

10 The LORD rules over the floodwaters.

The LORD reigns as king forever.

11 The LORD gives his people strength.

The LORD blesses them with peace.
