And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. 15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. 16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. 18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side. 19 And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.

Jesus Comes to Peter’s House

And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. 15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. 16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

Invitation

Jesus must have been invited over to Peter’s house
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
It Peter’s character to speak without thinking things through
Peter probably forgot that his mother-in-law was sick
Can you imagine the conversation of Peter and his wife?
What happens when people are sick?
Jesus healed
Jesus healed
Is Jesus welcome in your home?
Peter’s House is Place Jesus is Welcome

Improvement

And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. 15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.
When you have unexpected guests it puts pressure on the wife to try to help everyone
When Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law, it helped her, AND his wife, it improved the whole situation
Jesus improves things everywhere he goes

Time to Depart

Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
Faith is always tested
Not everyone’s “faith” is genuine

Scribes

The city of Jerusalem was the center of this scribal knowledge and interpretation of the Law. Only ordained teachers could transmit and create the tradition; this was the matter studied to perfection by students often beginning at age 14. When they completed their study at the age of 40, they could be ordained. As members with full rights, they could act as judges, be called rabbis, and occupy positions in administration of justice, government, and education. They joined the chief priests and aristocratic families who made up the SANHEDRIN. The scribes were held in greatest esteem by the people.

You can see how pride and envy could be a factor

Jesus was from a lower class
Jesus was younger
Jesus didn’t have their training
Elite Professors - Highly Esteemed
Jesus is getting all of the attention and followers
In modern day terminology we would probably call them (scribes) a scholar or a professor or doctor.
They are sometimes referred to as lawyers
Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him.
And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. 2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. 3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.

The Scribe Claims to want to Follow Jesus

The city of Jerusalem was the center of this scribal knowledge and interpretation of the Law. Only ordained teachers could transmit and create the tradition; this was the matter studied to perfection by students often beginning at age 14. When they completed their study at the age of 40, they could be ordained. And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
Talk is cheap

Jesus was from a lower class
Jesus was younger
Back it up (Faith)
Jesus didn’t have their training
To serve the Lord you have to be humble and have faith (difficult for the rich)
Jesus is getting all of the attention and followers
The Lord wants followers, but he doesn’t sugar coat what the ministry is like

Don’t miss the opportunity to serve the Lord

And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
Either you will serve the Lord or you will not
One excuse leads to another
Too many miss the opportunity because they make one excuse, than another
If you are waiting for a convenient time to start serving God, you WILL NEVER SERVE HIM!
And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.
....choose you this day whom ye will serve..... as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
