A waypoint is a point of reference that can be used for location and navigation. Waypoints can be the specific latitude and longitude of a location, a well-known building or natural feature.

North Star

Polaris, the North Star, is a standard waypoint that has been used by navigators for centuries. Pole stars are excellent waypoints, because their position in the sky appears fixed: the North Star will always appear in the north (unless you're at the North Pole, where it appears directly overhead).

Roadsigns

A waypoint is a reference point that helps us know where we are and helps us find our way. Signs are excellent waypoints.

Buoys help ships navigate through shallow channels and reefs.
