Not the Boss of Me

How to say “no” to the emotions that compete for control.

Autonomy

Once I can call my own shots, I’ll call all the right shots.

Our need of supervision may someday come to an end if we silence the toxic voices that come from within.

Our need of supervision will never come to an end until we silence the toxic voices that come from within.

How to say “no” to the emotions that compete for control.

If what Jesus says is true, you may have some work to do!

Matthew 15:1–2 NIV
1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”
MAtthew 15.

Oral Torah

Matthew 15:3 NIV
3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?
Matthew 15
Matthew 15:6–7 NIV
6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
Matthew 15.
Matthew 15:8 NIV

Matthew 15:10–16 NIV
10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.” 12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?” 13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” 15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.” 16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them.
Matthew 15:10 NIV
10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand.
Matthew 15:11 NIV
11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”

God is not most concerned with how our behavior affects him.

Matthew 15:15–16 NIV
15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.” 16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them.
Matthew 15:12 NIV
12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”
Matthew 15:15–17 NIV
15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.” 16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body?
matthew 15.
Matthew 15:14 NIV
14 Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
Matthew 15:18 NIV
18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.

What comes out of our mouths can put us at odds with people which puts us at odds with God.

Matthew 15:16 NIV
16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them.
atthew 15.15

“Sometimes I say things I don’t mean!”

Sometimes you say things you don’t mean…to say...

Sometimes you say things you don’t mean to say out loud.

22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.
Matthew 15:20 NIV
20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

You’re not the boss of me!

We already have a boss of us.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
