Introduction
People who fake themselves into a situation.
What is the difference between those outside the church and those in?
From the 5,000 to the 70…they are sent out to share their faith.
Jesus calls the church to be filled with workers.
Called to a Task
Jesus appoints 70 (or 72) - these are those who have been following Him. 2 by 2. Need for Companionship, Protection, and the Double Witness (Dr.
17:6; 19:15).
As a follower of Jesus, you are called to be a worker and not a watcher.
It is the workers who are called to pray…not the watchers!
Pray for more laborers, not for an easier task.
Build Community, Meet Physical Needs, and Share Spiritual Truth (vv.
7-9).
It’s a simple calling!
Neighbors, co-workers, kids’ activities.
Walk with them.
Share with them.
Rejection Happens
There were those communities that rejected in the past: Tyre and Sidon…now: Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum.
These are cities that were in the areas where Jesus had been preaching and His disciples had come.
You are not responsible for the response of people.
You are responsible for your obedience to the call.
Relief!
When they reject your message, they are rejecting God.
Removes the stress of having a “perfect” presentation!
Just follow the formula and trust God.
Thinking back to our model…moving people from the 5,000 ring to the 70.
Sunday morning services, Youth Wednesday nights, VBS, Falls Creek, any large events…build relationships, meet needs.
Then we share spiritual truth to see them move from that outside group to being followers of Jesus.
But, just numerically, we see that not everyone is going to accept the Gospel.
God saves.
Not me.
Not you.
That’s His job.
Our job is to share, regardless of acceptance or rejection.
Rejoice!
Had a really great experience?
And you couldn’t stop talking about it?
The disciples return and they are so excited about what they experienced!
Joy in service!
Jesus affirms them, but then redirects them.
He warns them...
Do not get caught glorifying past experiences and so neglect future opportunities.
The decline of a lot of churches is based in this dynamic.
Recreating wonderful and effect ministries, but culture shifted.
Maintain the message of Jesus but set it in modern methods.
And, ultimately, the greatest joy that we have is the joy of our salvation.
Not miracles!
This is the joy that carries us into action.
Conclusion
Blues Brothers, “We’re on a mission from God.”
The mission of the church: “he continuation of Jesus Christ’s mission through his followers.
Believers are empowered by the Holy Spirit and sent out by Christ to bear witness to him and to preach, heal, teach, baptise and make disciples of all peoples.”
The Great Commission
Don’t neglect prayer.
Beginning with prayer…as Jesus called us to.
Prayer for ourselves.
Prayer for each other.
Prayer for the lost.
Who will you pray for today?
