INTRODUCTION:
As we began here,
I want you to think about a time when something terrible happened to you -
Get that moment in your mind.
Perhaps
- a time when you found about devastating news.
- or perhaps a period of time ... that was especially difficult.
- or perhaps a time you waited in agony to find out an important decision.
During that time you likely faced at least a moment of despair.
>>>> A moment of hopeless.
And at least for a moment, in that moment, - everyone us contemplated believing a lie about God.
The rest
A lie which if allowed to continue,
>>> Would leave a wake of
despair,
depression,
hopelessness,
and anger in our lives.
ILLUSTRATION:
I remember when my wife and I faced a miscarriage.
- It was the first time we had really faced suffering in our marriage.
- Frankly, it was the first time I had faced real suffering in my life.
And I remember in the pain of that >>>> thinking -
Why God?
Does God love me?
How can God allow something like this to happen?
Certainly there are times in which we cannot escape some level of despair.
We live in a fallen world and the question is not if we will suffer, but when we will suffer.
And so it is not a question of if we will struggle with despair,
but when will we will struggle with despair.
(Gesture - visually - high, low, side to side, and point)
But
the level of our grief,
the depth of our darkness,
the extent of hopelessness
is often directly proportional to what we believe about God.
In this chapter, Paul has already reminded us
That we are waiting for glory and the adoption of our bodies.
That the Spirit helps us in our weakness.
And that we know God is working good for those who are called according to his purpose.
Isn't that enough?
Do we need any more?
Paul could have chosen to end this section right here.
But he didn’t.
And in fact, these verses are perhaps the most hopeful section in the whole chapter.
Why?
Because he forces us to ask questions about our relationship with God.
Paul thought so.
May I make a point of application with this -
To often, we are to black and white with the struggles of life.
Yes truth is right or
Someone struggles …
and we say - they ought to know better.
or in naiveness … we think we just need to beat people over the head with truth.
But life is messy and our hearts are messy.
In a perfect world, it would be true that all we need is the truth.
But in an imperfect, fallen world … where our hearts are prone to wonder from the things of God.
The issue is not so black and white.
>>>>> continues to talk about suffering.
But Paul approaches the problem of suffering in a very different way in this section.
The first part of this chapter affirms how to wait patiently for the return of Christ.
He gives clear truths that should encourage us.
However,
This part isn’t intended to give us direct truth.
It is intended to cause us to ask questions about our relationship with God .
And those answers are intended to to calm our fears.
It addresses the lies that we believe when we hurting.
These questions are powerful
- to calm our fears,
- and to cast out our doubts.
This morning we will concentrate on ,
but we will read all the way to v. 35.
:31-35
Rom 8:3132
Each of these questions are directed at lies that we tell ourselves in suffering.
- Lies about God and our relationship with God.
- Lies that make us question
the goodness,
the love,
Lies that
Lives that make us question the goodness, the love, and the grace of God.
and the grace of God.
To put it this way - they are lies that drive a wedge into our relationship with God.
>>>>>They are lies that relationally separate us from the Love of God.
ILLUSTRATION:
If you have done much wood splitting, you have probably used a steel wedge at some point.
And the more you hammer the wedge into the wood, the more it splits the wood.
It is the same with us - the more we believe these lies … the more we drive a wedge into our relationship with God.
It is not that we are going to lose are salvation,
In fact, are great verses to demonstrate why a believer in Christ can never truly lose their salvation.
But what we do find is feeling like God is a 1,000 miles away.
but that we will find ourselves feeling like God is a 1,000 miles away.
They are lies that cause us to despair in our suffering
rather then rejoicing in the grace found in Christ.
We will feel like
From this wonderful section -
We Must Reject the Lies of Despair and Trust in the Grace Found in Christ.
