Untitled Sermon (7)
Spiritual Gifts
The blessings, spiritual and temporal, bestowed on every Christian for the due fulfilment of his vocation. In a narrower sense, the word is used esp. for the supernatural graces which individual Christians need to perform the specific tasks incumbent on them in promoting the spiritual advancement of their fellows. In 1 Cor. 12:8–11 they are enumerated as comprising the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, the gifts of healing, working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, and the interpretation of tongues, to which are added, in verse 28, the charismata given to Apostles, prophets, teachers, and those entrusted with the government of the Church.
A. Lemonnyer, OP, in Dict. Bibl., Suppl. 1 (1928), cols. 1233–43, s.v. ‘Charismes’; J. H. Crehan, SJ, in Catholic Dictionary of Theology, 2 (1967), pp. 19–22, s.v. ‘Charisms’.
