JESUS (PLEASE LOOK AHEAD TO LAST PAGE)
Studying a person from the Bible can be an extremely meaningful way to gain insight about God and his relationship with humanity. The Bible presents story after story that centers around people’s interactions with God and their response to God’s call on their lives. Sometimes those people are models of godly living that we should aspire to emulate. Other times people’s behavior and attitude toward God reveal the fallenness of the world and the negative effects sin can have on our lives. The Biblical Events dataset provides a convenient way to find a list of key events related to the person you are studying. Certain people are involved in many biblical events, however, so their event lists can be quite long. The Event dataset lists events in canonical order, so you can get an overview of the sequence of events.
2. Jesus Christ
I. Christ in the OT
A. The Preexistent Christ
1. The Preexistent Christ in Theophany
a) Abraham’s Visitor
And Yahweh appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And he was sitting in the doorway of the tent at the heat of the day. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men were standing near him. And he saw them and ran from the doorway of the tent to meet them. And he bowed down to the ground. And he said, “My lord, if I have found favor in your eyes do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest under the tree. And let me bring a piece of bread, then refresh yourselves. Afterward you can pass on, once you have passed by with your servant.” Then they said, “Do so as you have said.” Then Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and he said, “Quickly—make three seahs of fine flour for kneading and make bread cakes!” And Abraham ran to the cattle and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, and he made haste to prepare it. Then he took curds and milk, and the calf which he prepared, and set it before them. And he was standing by them under the tree while they ate. And they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “Here, in the tent.” And he said, “I will certainly return to you in the spring, and look, Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the doorway of the tent, and which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; the way of women had ceased to be for Sarah. So Sarah laughed to herself saying, “After I am worn out and my husband is old, shall this pleasure be to me?” Then Yahweh said to Abraham, “What is this that Sarah laughed, saying, ‘Is it indeed true that I will bear a child, now that I have grown old?’ Is anything too difficult for Yahweh? At the appointed time I will return to you in the spring and Sarah shall have a son.” But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” because she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
Then the men set out from there, and they looked down upon Sodom. And Abraham went with them to send them on their way. Then Yahweh said, “Shall I conceal from Abraham what I am going to do? Abraham will surely become a great and strong nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed on account of him. For I have chosen him, that he will command his children and his household after him that they will keep the way of Yahweh, to do righteousness and justice, so that Yahweh may bring upon Abraham that which he said to him.” Then Yahweh said, “Because the outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and because their sin is very serious, I will go down and I will see. Have they done altogether according to its cry of distress which has come to me? If not, I will know.”
And the men turned from there and went toward Sodom. And Abraham was still standing before Yahweh. And Abraham drew near to Yahweh and said, “Will you also sweep away the righteous with the wicked? If perhaps there are fifty righteous in the midst of the city, will you also sweep them away and not forgive the place on account of the fifty righteous in her midst? Far be it from you to do such a thing as this, to kill the righteous with the wicked, that the righteous would be as the wicked! Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do justice?” And Yahweh said, “If I find fifty righteous in Sodom, in the midst of the city, then I will forgive the whole place for their sake.” Then Abraham answered and said, “Look, please, I was bold to speak to my Lord, but I am dust and ashes. Perhaps the fifty righteous are lacking five—will you destroy the whole city on account of the five?” And he answered, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” And once again he spoke to him and said, “What if forty are found there?” And he answered, “I will not do it on account of the forty.” And he said, “Please, let not my Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if thirty be found there?” And he answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.” And he said, “Please, now, I was bold to speak to my Lord. What if twenty be found there?” And he answered, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.” And he said, “Please, let not my Lord be angry, and I will speak only once more. What if ten are found there?” And he answered, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.” Then Yahweh left, as he finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.
Yahweh rained down from heaven upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Yahweh.
Genesis
;
b) Angel of God
Then the angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob,’ and I said, ‘Here I am.’ And he said, ‘Lift up your eyes and see—all the rams mounting the flock are streaked, speckled, and dappled, for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you. I am the God of Bethel where you anointed a stone pillar, where you made a vow to me. Now get up, go out from this land and return to the land of your birth.’ ”
Genesis 31:
; ; ; ,
And he blessed Joseph and said,
“The God before whom my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, walked,
The God who shepherded me all my life unto this day,
The angel who redeemed me from all evil,
may he bless the boys.
And through them let my name be perpetuated,
and the name of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac.
And let them multiply into many in the midst of the earth.
Genesis 48:15-16

c) Angel of His Presence
And he said, “Surely my people are children; they will not break faith.” And he became a Savior to them.
In all their distress, there was no distress,
and the messenger of his presence saved them,
in his love and compassion he himself redeemed them,
and he lifted them up,
and he supported them all the days of old.
But they were the ones who rebelled,
and they grieved his Holy Spirit,
so he became an enemy to them;
he himself fought against them.
Then his people remembered the days of old, of Moses.
Where is the one who led up them from the sea with the shepherds of his flock?
Where is the one who puts his Holy Spirit inside him,

9:6 a son has been given to us The promise of hope through a future Davidic king. Attempts to connect this promise to a ruler of Isaiah’s day usually focus on Hezekiah, son and successor of Ahaz, the king to whom Isaiah delivered his warnings and who rejected his offer to provide a sign in . The sign provided in 7:14 and the prediction of a future ideal Davidic ruler point ultimately to the Messiah, but immediate hopes for Judah’s future would have been directed at the Davidic line, continued through Hezekiah. However, Hezekiah was likely already born during the Syro-Ephraimite conflict that forms the historical backdrop of this part of Isaiah. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God This list of titles or attributes for the future king include divine titles that would be unusual if referring to a human Davidic king. For example, “Mighty God” clearly refers to Yahweh Himself in 10:21.
14:6 the way The person and work of Jesus serves as believers’ pathway to God the Father. Jesus’ ‘I Am’ Statements Table the truth Since there were divergent Jewish traditions, it was difficult for the Jewish person of the first century to know which tradition was Yahweh’s will. See note on 1:14 (compare 1:17). the life Refers to Jesus as the source and power of believers’ resurrection to eternal life. See note on 11:25. Jesus denies there is any other method but belief in Him for receiving eternal life (compare note on 10:7). In the first century, the Pharisees proposed that people could receive eternal life by obeying the law. The Sadducees didn’t believe in eternal life or the resurrection of the dead, so they would have seen this as a moot point. Most Jewish people followed the Pharisees’ beliefs, but they did not abide by all their rules. Doing so would have been virtually impossible, especially for anyone who wasn’t very wealthy, due to the requirements for labor, sacrifices, and giving. Jesus claims that these things are not the way to eternal life, which can be attained only through belief in Him (compare 12:50; 14:16; ; ). This claim does not mean people are free to sin—rather they are called to love one another as Jesus has loved them (see note on ; compare ). Salvation TBD Salvation DBI except through me Salvation does not come through the law, sacrifices, religious practices, or the overthrow of foreign oppressors—all of which were beliefs held by Jews in the first century. Instead, Jesus Himself is the channel through which people can have relationship with God the Father and spend eternity with Him.
AA 24This is the disciple who is testifying about these things, and who has written down these things. And we know that his testimony is true.
B 25Now there are also many other things that Jesus did, which—if they were written down one after the other—I suppose not even the world itself could contain the books that would be written. [1]
